Wordsmith is building the legal operations platform for in-house teams, and we are growing fast.
We believe in-house legal is becoming one of the most important functions in the AI era. Every business is moving faster, but legal work is still too often scattered across inboxes, chats, documents, and disconnected systems.
Wordsmith brings that work into one system. Requests come in from across the business, AI agents handle the routine, lawyers stay in control where judgment matters, and every step is captured as work happens.
We are built for in-house legal, not law firms. Our goal is to help legal teams move faster, reduce unnecessary external counsel spend, and become a function the business can run with.
More than 500 companies, including Financial Times, Safelite, Trip.com, Canva, Starling, and Sage, use Wordsmith. Backed by $100M from Index Ventures, General Catalyst, Highland Europe, and others, we are building one of the defining companies in legal AI.
We're looking for someone who lives at the intersection of design and code. You'll work directly with product and engineering to frame the problem, design the flows, then prototype, build, and polish the experiences that make Wordsmith feel effortless, even when the workflows underneath are anything but. This role suits someone who thinks like a designer and builds like an engineer, or the other way round.
You'll design products where the behaviour is not always fixed, the inputs are messy, and the outcome still has to feel simple and reliable. You'll own that outcome end to end, and you'll be trusted to run with it on your own.
Design and build the UX and UI: the flows, components, and interactions that simplify complex legal workflows
Rapidly prototype new concepts in code to validate ideas before committing to a full build
Bridge design and engineering: turn designs into shipped code, and push design forward through technical craft
Own the quality of UI implementation across the product, from pixel-perfect execution to the small interactions that make it feel alive
Help define product direction, frame ambiguous problems, and design the end-to-end flows behind the interface
Contribute to the design system and component libraries that let the team ship faster
Use AI as part of how you work, to explore, prototype, and think past traditional UX and UI patterns
You can shape the direction of projects and bring people with you. You've earned the trust of engineers, PMs, and senior stakeholders before, and you know how to move a team without holding a mandate
You can build and ship your own front-end (TypeScript, React, CSS, animation). AI writes a lot of it now, so the real bar is taste and judgment: knowing what good looks like and getting it the last 10%
You're self-sufficient: you can take a problem from ambiguity to shipped experience on your own, no hand-holding required
You have an eye for detail and care deeply about craft, in the flows and logic as much as the pixels
You finish what you start: polished and shipped, not left at good enough
You move fast, prototyping ideas in hours, not days
You think in systems and build reusable, maintainable UI
You're excited about AI and want to help define new interaction paradigms for an entire industry
Experience building or scaling design systems
Experience building developer tools, technical products, or other complex software for expert users
Formal design training, or a track record that makes it irrelevant
A real interest in how legal work actually gets done
We're an in-office team in Edinburgh. We work together because it helps us collaborate closely, move faster, and make better product decisions. Expect the office as your default. Design sits tightly with product and engineering, so you'll be in the room for the decisions, not working in isolation.
Real ownership over product direction and design decisions
Complex, meaningful problems at the intersection of AI and real-world legal work
A small team of engineers, designers, and domain experts who ship
Competitive salary and meaningful equity
At Wordsmith, you'll build category-defining tools that change how an entire industry works. If you want your design work to have real-world impact at scale, we'd love to hear from you.
