Job Overview
We are looking for an experienced Powder Coater to help lead surface finishing operations in our production facility. This role is responsible for coating, and curing metal parts to a high-quality finish, while mentoring junior staff, maintaining equipment, and ensuring consistent compliance with safety and quality standards. The ideal candidate has hands-on powder coating experience, a strong eye for finish quality, and the ability to troubleshoot process issues independently.
Responsibilities
- Ensure metal surfaces are adequately prepared for coating, including cleaning, degreasing, sandblasting, and masking as required.
- Apply powder coatings using electrostatic spray equipment, ensuring even coverage and correct film thickness.
- Operate and monitor curing ovens, adjusting time and temperature settings to specification.
- Inspect finished parts for defects such as runs, orange peel, fish-eyes, or inconsistent coverage, and rework as needed.
- Help lead line staff on correct techniques, safety procedures, and quality standards.
- Perform routine maintenance and troubleshooting on spray guns, booths, and curing ovens.
- Maintain accurate production records, including batch numbers, coating specifications, and quality checks.
- Manage powder inventory, minimising waste and ensuring correct storage of materials.
- Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations, including proper use of PPE and handling of chemicals.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives to increase efficiency and reduce rework rates.
- Working closely with the scheduling lead and quality lead to ensure that jobs are completed on time and to the required quality standards.
Experience
- 3+ years of hands-on experience in powder coating or industrial finishing, with demonstrated lead or senior-level responsibility.
- Strong working knowledge of electrostatic spray equipment, curing ovens, and pre-treatment processes.
- Solid understanding of coating specifications, film thickness measurement, and quality inspection methods.
- Ability to read and interpret work orders, technical specifications, and colour/finish requirements.
- Experience supervising other coaters or production staff.
- Comfortable working in a physically demanding environment, including standing for extended periods and lifting up to 25kg.
- Good understanding of workplace health and safety practices, including chemical handling and PPE requirements.
