About the role
Sawgrass Substrates is a market-leading mushroom substrate manufacturer, producing over 1,150 tonnes of substrate every week — around 23% of the total supply on the island of Ireland. It is a continuous, round-the-clock industrial composting operation where reliable plant is everything: when equipment stops, production stops.
We are looking for an experienced, genuinely hands-on multi-skilled fitter to maintain and repair mechanical and electrical plant across the whole facility. This is a broad, varied role for someone who enjoys keeping a demanding process running — planned maintenance one day, diagnosing and fixing a breakdown the next. You will work closely with the existing maintenance team and the operations team to keep the facility producing to standard.
Key responsibilities
● Carry out the planned preventative maintenance (PPM) programme across all plant and equipment.
● Diagnose and repair breakdowns quickly across both mechanical and electrical systems to minimise downtime.
● Maintain conveyor and drive systems — belts, bearings, motors, gearboxes, chains, sprockets, couplings, rollers.
● Service and repair pumps, valves, dosing systems (including acid dosing) and pipework.
● Maintain and repair the facility's loading shovels and other mobile plant — engines, hydraulics, transmissions and running gear.
● Maintain bunker hall equipment — overhead crane, push walls — and filling hall equipment such as filling hoppers and the walking floor.
● Support steam boiler, chiller, scrubber, extraction and odour-control (biobed) systems.
● Electrical fault-finding and repair — single and three-phase, motor controls, contactors, inverters / variable speed drives (VSDs), sensors and control wiring.
● Basic fabrication and welding for repairs and small improvement works.
● Isolate plant safely (lock-out / tag-out) and work to all health & safety requirements.
● Manage and maintain spares and maintenance stock; flag critical spares.
● Keep clear maintenance records and feed back into the PPM system.
Essential skills & experience
● Time-served mechanical fitter / maintenance engineer with proven industrial experience.
● Strong practical knowledge of belts, bearings, motors, gearboxes, drive systems and conveyors.
● Experience with pumps, hydraulics and pneumatics.
● Welding and fabrication ability.
● Able to read and work from mechanical and electrical drawings.
● Confident working independently, prioritising sensibly and staying calm during a breakdown.
● Relevant mechanical and/or electrical qualification — apprenticeship, NVQ, City & Guilds or equivalent.
● Full driving licence.
Desirable
● Hands-on electrical fault-finding and repair experience — single and three-phase, motor controls and drives.
● Experience maintaining mobile plant such as loading shovels — engines, hydraulics and transmissions.
● Electrical qualification / 18th Edition wiring regulations.
● PLC awareness — able to fault-find and interpret, programming not required.
● Steam boiler or pressure systems experience.
● Refrigeration / chiller experience (F-Gas).
● Experience in food, composting, waste, agricultural or process industries.
● Relevant tickets — working at height, abrasive wheels, forklift, MEWP.
What we offer
● A varied, hands-on role with real responsibility in a growing, market-leading business.
● Competitive salary
● Holidays, other benefits
● Training and development
● A stable long-term opportunity in a facility undergoing significant investment.
