We are seeking an experienced and dependable Deputy Care Home Manager to support the Registered Care Home Manager with the safe, effective and compliant day-to-day management of the Home.
ABOUT THE ROLE
As Deputy Care Home Manager, you will provide visible leadership to the care team and help maintain high standards across care delivery, staffing, safeguarding, compliance and quality assurance.
You will support the Registered Care Home Manager with operational responsibilities and deputise during periods of absence when authorised. You will ensure staff are properly supported, residents’ needs are met and identified risks or compliance concerns are addressed promptly.
This role requires a confident care professional who can balance compassionate leadership with clear accountability and strong operational oversight.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Care Delivery and Resident Outcomes
- Support the delivery of safe, effective and person-centred care.
- Ensure residents are treated with dignity, respect and compassion.
- Promote residents’ independence, choice, privacy and involvement in decisions about their care.
- Monitor residents’ health, wellbeing and changing support needs.
- Ensure changes or deterioration in residents’ conditions are recognised, recorded and escalated appropriately.
- Ensure care plans, risk assessments and daily records are accurate, current and regularly reviewed.
- Support admissions, assessments, transitions and discharges.
- Maintain effective communication with residents, relatives, advocates and healthcare professionals.
- Promote meaningful activities, positive relationships and community participation.
Leadership and Staff Management
- Provide visible leadership and direction to care and support staff.
- Lead shifts and ensure the effective allocation of duties.
- Monitor staff conduct, performance and standards of care.
- Support recruitment, induction and probation processes.
- Conduct staff supervisions at least every three months, or more frequently where required.
- Support annual appraisals and staff development.
- Monitor mandatory training and staff competency requirements.
- Address poor practice promptly and escalate serious concerns.
- Support absence, capability, grievance and disciplinary processes within delegated authority.
- Promote a positive, accountable and inclusive working culture.
- Ensure appropriate staffing levels and skills mix are maintained.
- Coordinate rotas and arrange suitable cover for staffing shortages.
Safeguarding, Medication and Health and Safety
- Respond immediately to safeguarding concerns in accordance with organisational and local safeguarding procedures.
- Ensure accidents, incidents, medication errors and near misses are properly recorded and reported.
- Support incident investigations and ensure identified lessons are implemented.
- Support safe medicines management, including audits, competency checks, storage and administration records.
- Monitor compliance with fire safety, infection prevention and control, COSHH and health and safety requirements.
- Ensure emergency procedures, drills and contingency arrangements are understood and followed.
- Monitor the safety, condition and security of the premises.
- Escalate serious risks and compliance concerns to the Registered Care Home Manager without delay.
Quality Assurance and Compliance
- Support compliance with the Health and Social Care Act 2008, associated regulations and CQC fundamental standards.
- Complete delegated audits, spot checks, observations and quality-monitoring activities.
- Develop and monitor improvement actions arising from audits, inspections, complaints, incidents and feedback.
- Ensure records demonstrate safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led practice.
- Support the Registered Care Home Manager with regulatory notifications and statutory reporting.
- Maintain accurate, timely and confidential records.
- Ensure information is handled in accordance with UK GDPR, data protection requirements and organisational policies.
- Remain up to date with relevant legislation, guidance and good practice.
Operational and Service Management
- Support the preparation and management of staff rotas, timesheets and payroll information.
- Monitor supplies, equipment and stock.
- Report maintenance concerns promptly and monitor actions through to completion.
- Support budget monitoring and ensure resources are used responsibly and cost-effectively.
- Assist with referrals, pre-admission assessments and occupancy management.
- Support the Home to maintain sustainable occupancy and minimise avoidable vacancies.
- Respond professionally and promptly to enquiries from prospective residents and their families.
- Contribute to monthly reports, management meetings and service-improvement plans.
- Participate in on-call arrangements and provide operational cover when reasonably required.
PERSON SPECIFICATION
Essential Requirements
- A relevant Level 3 qualification in Adult Care, or a commitment to achieve an appropriate qualification within an agreed timeframe.
- Substantial experience working within an adult social care setting.
- Experience leading shifts or supervising care staff.
- Sound knowledge of person-centred care, safeguarding and medicines management.
- Understanding of health and safety requirements and CQC fundamental standards.
- Experience supporting staff supervision, performance and development.
- Strong leadership and communication skills.
- Strong written, organisational and record-keeping skills.
- Ability to identify risk, prioritise competing demands and make sound operational decisions.
- Confidence using digital care-recording and workforce-management systems.
- Ability to work flexibly, including evenings, weekends and on-call duties where required.
- The existing right to work in the UK without requiring employer sponsorship for this role.
Desirable Requirements
- Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management for Adult Care, or currently working towards it.
- Previous experience as a Deputy Manager, Team Leader or Senior Care Worker within a care home.
- Experience completing quality audits, incident investigations and service-improvement plans.
- Knowledge of the Mental Capacity Act 2005 and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards.
- Experience supporting recruitment, occupancy management and CQC compliance.
