About Weather It
Weather It is the group's domestic garden and landscape brand, selling planters and outdoor metalwork to homeowners through its website, to trade customers such as garden designers, landscapers and contractors, and through distributors. It runs alongside its sister brand, Vertex, the group's commercial specification brand, on one shared operation: fabrication, accounts and production are shared, while the two brands stay outwardly distinct.
Weather It is the volume engine of the group, and this role sits at the heart of making that volume repeatable: well organised design data, clean cutting files and accurate bills of materials are what let the operation scale.
Role purpose
Produce the design work that keeps Weather It moving: designs for live projects and new products for the range. Just as importantly, build the design infrastructure underneath it, a standard library of cutting files organised in a legible, scalable format, bills of materials on SAP and standardised item codes, so that production, purchasing and costing all run from one reliable set of data.
This is a genuine development role. You will be mentored by the Lead Design Engineer, whose own focus is on Vertex, and over time you will gain training across functions and exposure to large, complex urban projects delivered under the Vertex brand.
Key responsibilities
Project and product design
- Create designs for live Weather It projects, working day to day with the Production Manager and the workshop.
- Create new products for the Weather It range, taking them from concept through to manufacture ready drawings.
- Produce drawings and cutting files that are right first time and suit how the business fabricates.
Design library and standards
- Develop a standard library of cutting files for the range.
- Organise the library in a legible, scalable format with clear structure and naming, so any user can find the right file quickly and the library grows without becoming messy.
- Create and maintain standardised item codes so products, parts and materials are identified consistently across design, production and SAP.
SAP and production data
- Create bills of materials on SAP so that purchasing, costing and production all work from accurate, current data.
- Keep design data, item codes and bills of materials aligned as products evolve.
Learning and development
- Work under the mentorship of the Lead Design Engineer, learning design for manufacture in fabricated metal.
- Take part in training across functions, spending time with production, purchasing and the wider operation.
- Gain exposure to large, complex urban projects through the group's Vertex brand as experience grows.
Candidate profile
- SolidWorks experience is essential; confident producing 3D models, 2D drawings and flat patterns or cutting files.
- Experience with metalwork is desirable: fabricated steel, sheet metal, laser cutting, folding or welding processes.
- Organised and methodical, with a real interest in file structure, naming conventions and tidy data; this role builds the library the business will run on.
- Comfortable with, or keen to learn, ERP systems such as SAP for bills of materials and item codes.
- An early career designer who wants to grow: curious, proactive and happy to ask questions, take feedback and learn from a senior mentor.
- A product, industrial or mechanical design background, by qualification or experience, is welcome.
Notes
- The role is office based at B70 9DD and reports to the Production Manager, with technical mentorship from the Lead Design Engineer.
- Operations are shared with the group's commercial brand, Vertex; over time the role offers cross functional development and exposure to large, complex urban projects.
- As the design function grows, the role offers a clear path toward more senior design responsibility.
