Job Specification
Job Title: Phoneline Support Operative
Reporting to: Helpline Manager
Contract: Fixed-term 4 year programme (Church of England Redress Scheme for Survivors)
Hours: Full time (35 hours per week) working on a shift rota basis to cover standard office hours and some evenings. Timings may change subject to demand.
Location: Home-based or option to work from the office in Rugby. You will be required to attend the office on occasions.
Salary: £ 28,500 - £29,355
About Us: The Survivors Trust (TST) is a UK-wide Charity that is the national umbrella for over 120 specialist member organisations who give support to male and female survivors,
(young people and adults) of rape, sexual violence and childhood sexual abuse throughout the UK and Ireland. Our core aim is to empower all survivors of sexual violence by supporting and improving effective responses for them.
We are a relatively small team of dedicated individuals, passionate about the work we do. TST provides a generous leave allowance to staff, access to TST training and regular clinical supervision for frontline staff, as well access to EAP, social and well-being events.
Summary of the role: Our confidential support line service is available to survivors; their loved ones and professionals who have been directly or indirectly affected by rape, sexual violence, harassment, bullying, and childhood sexual abuse and who are looking to acquire information and support for the many challenges they face on a day-to-day basis. We are seeking resilient and confident responders who can provide empathic and impartial support to our callers by providing them with information, guidance and assistance with completing an online application form as part of the Church of England Redress Scheme for survivors of abuse. This is a crucial role in supporting survivors to access the redress scheme and cope with the potential challenges that may arise during the process.
The role will provide a high quality, free, independent and telephone support service, which offers emotional support and practical assistance. The role will typically involve providing practical assistance completing an application form, as well as emotional support to distressed clients, signposting, coordinating communication, managing documentation and supporting with day-to-day operational needs.
Key Role Requirements:
Assistance with the Application
- Talking to clients over the phone, to explore the assistance they are seeking help with.
- Providing information, guidance and active support completing the application form.
- Finding information on support routes and signposting for the clients’ and helping them to understand their options.
- Supporting clients to take action to meet their needs. This might include making phone calls, or referring the client to another organisation
- Keeping records as required, taking full account of governance relating to the use and recording of information.
Undertaking Training and Development
- Complete an induction and training programme to obtain the skills needed to become a competent trauma-informed responder.
- Commit to regular training updates to maintain and develop knowledge and skills.
- Participate in regular reviews of progress and identifying new learning needs.
- Keep informed about team matters, service developments and changes.
- Once experienced, support new trainees in their learning and initial stages of the work.
- Opportunities to develop additional skills and become a shift-leader, supporting colleagues with clients in crisis and who require safeguarding intervention.
Essential Skills Required:
- Excellent communication skills including active listening
- Competent use of IT for recording monitoring data, record keeping and document production.
- Dealing sensitively with clients with complex needs
- Skills in providing advice to others in a professional capacity
- Previous experience in a related area e.g. counselling, ISVA, trauma support services,
- mental health services or strong administrative background
- Ability to interpret and summarise data accurately and clearly.

- Undertake administration duties relevant to the role.
- Contribute to discussions about the overall planning & processes of the service.
- Provide assistance and support to other TST business where appropriate.
