Start your engineering career working on pipework, steel fabrication and energy systems.
We’re looking for a reliable, practical and enthusiastic apprentice to join our workshop and fabrication team.
This is a hands-on role for someone who wants to develop a career in pipe fabrication and welding, while gaining experience supporting industrial and commercial energy projects including CHP, heat pumps, battery storage, renewable energy and associated mechanical plant.
You’ll spend most of your time working within our workshop alongside experienced fabricators and engineers, while attending college to complete your pipe welding apprenticeship and qualifications.
There will also be occasional opportunities to travel and work on customer sites.
What you'll be doing
Your role will develop as your skills and experience grow, but initially you'll assist with:
- Fabricating and welding pipework for industrial and commercial projects
- Fabricating steel supports, frames, brackets and structures
- Cutting, preparing, bevelling and fitting pipework prior to welding
- Learning different welding processes and techniques
- Measuring, marking out and preparing materials from drawings
- Assisting with the assembly of mechanical and energy systems
- Supporting the manufacture of skids, plant assemblies and prefabricated systems
- Using workshop machinery and hand tools safely
- Cleaning, preparing and finishing fabricated components
- Assisting with pressure testing and quality checks where appropriate
Workshop & Stores Responsibilities
Being part of the workshop team means helping to keep the whole operation organised and running properly.
You'll also assist with:
- Keeping the workshop clean, tidy and organised
- Maintaining safe walkways and working areas
- Tracking goods, materials and equipment in and out
- Checking deliveries against orders and paperwork
- Helping manage stock levels and consumable materials
- Recording the movement of company plant and equipment
- Preparing tools, plant and materials for site teams
- Loading and unloading deliveries and vehicles
- Keeping stores and material areas organised
- Identifying damaged or missing tools and equipment
Plant & Equipment Maintenance
You'll also help look after the equipment that keeps our projects moving, including:
- Routine inspection and maintenance of workshop equipment
- Basic maintenance of company plant and machinery
- Cleaning and servicing tools and equipment
- Checking welding equipment, generators, pumps and other site plant
- Assisting with PAT, inspection and maintenance schedules where appropriate
- Reporting defects and helping ensure equipment is ready for the next project
College & Training
As part of the role, you'll attend college to work towards recognised qualifications in pipe welding and fabrication.
You'll combine your college learning with real practical experience in the workshop, allowing you to develop skills in:
- Pipe welding
- Pipe fabrication
- Welding procedures
- Engineering drawings
- Materials and metallurgy
- Measuring and setting out
- Quality control
- Health & safety
- Industrial engineering practices
You'll also receive training from experienced engineers and fabricators within the business.
Site Work
Although this is primarily a workshop-based role, there will be occasional travel and site work.
This could include:
- Assisting with installation of fabricated pipework
- Mechanical installation
- Plant installation
- Site welding and fabrication
- Modifications to existing systems
- Supporting commissioning teams
- Helping with project mobilisation and demobilisation
Some site work may involve working away from home, so you must be willing to travel when required.
What we're looking for
Experience isn't essential — attitude is.
We're looking for someone who is:

- Comfortable working as part of a team
- Willing to attend college and complete the academic side of the apprenticeship
- Prepared to travel and work away occasionally
- Safety-conscious and willing to follow procedures
- Interested in developing a long-term career within engineering
The Opportunity
This isn't just an apprenticeship in welding.
You'll have the opportunity to develop experience across mechanical engineering, pipe fabrication, welding and modern energy systems, supporting projects involving:
- CHP systems
- Large heat pumps
- Commercial and industrial heating systems
- Energy centres
- Renewable energy installations
- Pumps, valves and associated plant
- Prefabricated energy and mechanical systems
For someone with the right attitude, there will be significant opportunities to develop beyond the apprenticeship into roles such as Pipe Welder, Fabricator, Mechanical Engineer, Site Engineer or Workshop Supervisor.
