Salary: £40,000 plus incentive scheme
Hours: Monday to Thursday, 8:00am – 6:15pm (additional time may be required)
About the Role
The Odd Chair Company is looking for an experienced and hands-on Upholstery Furniture Workshop Manager with strong knowledge of the upholstery trade to oversee daily factory operations and ensure the smooth running of production from frame to finished product.
This is a dual shopfloor and office-based role, suited to someone with practical upholstery manufacturing experience, strong leadership skills, and the ability to maintain high production and quality standards.
Key Responsibilities
Production & Workflow Management
- Oversee and streamline manufacturing processes to improve efficiency and productivity.
- Manage production schedules to ensure customer deadlines are achieved.
- Monitor workflow across all production stages including frame making, cutting, sewing, upholstery, and finishing.
- Reduce material waste and improve operational performance.
- Oversee supply chain activity and coordinate with suppliers when required.
Quality Assurance & Compliance
- Set and maintain manufacturing quality standards.
- Conduct final inspections on completed furniture before dispatch.
- Ensure all products comply with UK Furniture & Furnishings (Fire Safety) Regulations.
- Maintain high attention to detail throughout the production process.
Team Leadership
- Lead, motivate, and support the workshop team.
- Manage staff scheduling and day-to-day workforce planning.
- Conduct performance reviews and provide ongoing feedback.
- Train staff in new upholstery techniques, quality standards, and manufacturing procedures.
- Promote a positive, productive, and safe working environment.
Technical Upholstery Expertise
- Demonstrate strong practical knowledge of:
- Frame making
- Cutting & sewing
Pre-upholstery preparation
Final upholstery and finishing
- Support production teams with problem-solving and technical guidance.
- Ensure finished goods meet company standards for craftsmanship and presentation.
Materials, Inventory & Systems
- Manage material usage and stock control.
- Monitor inventory levels and coordinate reordering when required.
- Maintain accurate production and stock records.
- Use CAD systems and manufacturing software where required.
Skills & Experience Required
- Previous experience managing within an upholstery furniture manufacturing environment.
- Strong understanding of upholstery production processes from frame to finish.
- Excellent organisational and leadership skills.
- Ability to manage both shopfloor operations and office-based administration.
- Knowledge of fire regulation compliance within upholstered furniture manufacturing.
- Experience with production planning, stock management, and workflow optimisation.
- CAD system knowledge preferred.
- Strong communication and problem-solving abilities.
- High attention to detail and commitment to quality.
