Orthopaedic Surgical First Assistant – Band 6/7

Pay: £30 per hour / £300 per 10-hour day

The Opportunity
We are seeking an experienced Orthopaedic Surgical First Assistant (SFA) to join a specialist hospital in Weston-super-Mare.
This is an excellent opportunity for a Band 6 or Band 7 equivalent clinician with strong orthopaedic theatre experience to work directly alongside experienced orthopaedic surgeons within a professional, high-quality theatre environment.
You will play a key role throughout surgical procedures, providing skilled first-assistant support and anticipating the needs of the operating surgeon to ensure safe, efficient and effective patient care.

Key Responsibilities
- Work directly alongside orthopaedic surgeons as the Surgical First Assistant
- Provide skilled assistance throughout operative procedures
- Assist with surgical exposure, tissue handling and haemostasis as appropriate
- Anticipate the surgeon's requirements and respond effectively throughout procedures
- Prepare and maintain the operating theatre, ensuring instruments and equipment are available, sterile and functioning correctly
- Maintain strict aseptic technique and infection prevention and control standards
- Assist with safe patient positioning and preparation for surgery
- Work closely with surgeons, anaesthetists, scrub staff, ODPs and the wider multidisciplinary theatre team
- Support the safe and efficient running of surgical lists
- Maintain high standards of patient safety, professionalism and perioperative care
- Remain calm, focused and effective within a busy surgical environment
About You
We are looking for a confident and experienced Surgical First Assistant who can hit the ground running.
You will ideally have:
- Proven experience working as a Surgical First Assistant
- Band 6 or Band 7 equivalent experience
- Strong orthopaedic theatre experience
- Excellent knowledge of anatomy, physiology and surgical procedures
- Strong understanding of aseptic technique and infection prevention and control
- Confidence working directly alongside surgeons and consultants
- Excellent communication and multidisciplinary team-working skills
- The ability to anticipate surgical requirements and respond effectively under pressure
- A strong commitment to patient safety and high standards of clinical care
- Experience within a private hospital environment is desirable
- Current BLS or equivalent certification is required
Desirable Experience
Experience within one or more of the following areas would be advantageous:
- Orthopaedic trauma
- Joint replacement / arthroplasty
- Arthroscopy
- Sports surgery
- Spinal or other specialist orthopaedic procedures
