Instructor / Skipper
Location: Port Edgar Marina, South Queensferry
Reports to: General Manager / Operations Manager
Contract: Full Time, Permanent
Hours: 37.5 hours per week, worked flexibly to meet operational requirements, occasionally including evenings,
weekends, overnight travel and shift work.
Salary: £25,420–£30,000 PA depending on experience and qualifications
The Role
Edinburgh Marine is one of Scotland's leading providers of maritime training, commercial marine services and specialist small craft operations. Based at Port Edgar Marina, we deliver RYA and MCA accredited training alongside vessel charter, marine services, environmental support and bespoke marine projects throughout the UK.
As an Instructor / Skipper, you will play a central role in the day-to-day operation of the business, delivering professional training, operating company vessels and supporting commercial projects, both run by Edinburgh Marine as well as partner organisations. This is a varied, hands-on position requiring flexibility, initiative and a strong commitment to safety, customer service and good seamanship.
Responsibilities
The role combines instructional, operational and commercial duties. You will deliver practical and classroom-based training to a wide range of customers, ensuring courses meet relevant awarding-body standards while providing a positive and professional learning experience.
You will also skipper company vessels on commercial operations including surveys, wildlife trips, crew transfers, charter work and other specialist marine activities. Safe navigation, sound judgement and effective decision-making are fundamental to the role.
You will help maintain vessels, trailers, equipment and facilities, including daily checks, routine maintenance, defect reporting and preparation for coding inspections. You will also support the wider business through administration, operational records, course documentation and commercial projects.
Key responsibilities include:
- Delivering RYA, MCA and bespoke training courses.
- Skippering vessels on commercial and training operations.
- Maintaining vessels, equipment and facilities to a high standard.
- Preparing course documentation and operational records.
- Supporting commercial projects and new opportunities.
- Maintaining excellent customer service and professional standards.
- Working in accordance with company policies, the Safety Management System and MCA requirements.
- Assisting with administrative duties as operational requirements dictate.
Qualifications & Experience
Applicants should have strong practical boating experience and the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team. Previous instructional experience is desirable; however, further training and professional development will be provided for suitable candidates.
Essential
- RYA Powerboat Instructor qualification.
- Valid First Aid certificate.
- Full UK Driving Licence.
- Willingness to join the PVG Scheme.

Desirable
- RYA Advanced Powerboat with Commercial Endorsement.
- RYA Advanced Powerboat Instructor.
- RYA Yachtmaster Power Offshore.
- Instructor qualifications in areas such as Diesel Engine Maintenance, VHF, First Aid, Radar or Sea Survival.
- Previous instructional or commercial marine experience.
- Other relevant marine qualifications and practical industry experience.
Training, Development & Salary Progression
We recognise that suitable candidates may require further training to fulfil all aspects of the role. Relevant professional training and qualifications will be funded and supported by the company.
Where additional development is required, this may be reflected in the starting salary, with opportunities for progression as the successful candidate gains qualifications, develops competencies and takes on greater responsibility.
