Job Advert
The Under Shepherd will support the day-to-day management of Blenheim's in-hand sheep flock, working alongside the Head Shepherd to deliver high standards of stockmanship across the breeding ewe flock. The role also provides general livestock support to the estate's cattle herd and other stock (including pigs) as required, and works flexibly across the wider Farms team.
Sheep work is seasonal and physically demanding, with irregular hours including early mornings, evenings and weekend cover, particularly through lambing, shearing and tupping. This is a hands-on, outdoor role suited to someone who takes pride in the welfare and performance of livestock and enjoys working as part of a small, close-knit team.
What we are looking for:
We are looking for someone who can bring the right skills and mindset to the role. You might not meet all the criteria, and that’s okay, transferable skills and experience are highly valued.
-
Demonstrable practical experience in sheep husbandry, including lambing (essential).
-
Experience with cattle handling and general care (desirable but not essential — training can be provided).
-
Sound stockmanship — able to read animal health and welfare and respond promptly and appropriately.
-
Working knowledge of livestock movement regulations, standstill periods and CPH record keeping.
-
Full UK driving licence; competent, or willing to be trained, in tractor, quad and UTV operation over varied terrain.
-
Practical skills in fencing, basic machinery upkeep and general farm maintenance.
-
Able to work outdoors in all weather and unsociable hours during lambing, shearing and calving, both independently and as part of a team.
-
Good communication skills and a responsible, professional approach
Desirable skills (training will be provided to the right candidate):
-
Lantra or NPTC qualifications relevant to livestock handling or machinery.
-
Prior experience with pigs, goats or other minority/rare breed stock.
-
Working knowledge of farm assurance scheme requirements.
-
First Aid certification.
-
Flexible and adaptable in approach to work
-
Calm, patient and attentive stockmanship
-
Pro-active approach to work
-
The opportunity to work within one of Britain's most historic and diverse estates
-
A supportive team environment with opportunities for training and skill development
-
Competitive salary, benefits, and access to estate facilities
Location: Park Farm
Contract Type: Permanent Full Time
