Learning Mentor Alternative ProvisionThe Role
We are looking for a passionate, resilient and enthusiastic Learning Mentor to join our Alternative Provision team. This role is ideal for someone who is committed to supporting children and young people who may have experienced barriers to education, including SEND, Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, trauma, exclusion or other additional needs.
As a Learning Mentor, you will build positive relationships with students, helping them to re-engage with learning, develop confidence, improve emotional wellbeing and achieve their individual goals. You will provide both one-to-one and small group support within our provision and through outreach work in local schools, acting as a positive role model and advocate for every young person.
A full UK driving licence is essential as travel between educational settings is required.
Key Responsibilities
- Build trusting, professional relationships with students across Key Stage 2, Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4.
- Deliver engaging one-to-one and small group mentoring sessions tailored to individual needs.
- Support students with SEMH needs, behavioural challenges and barriers to learning.
- Develop and deliver creative interventions that promote resilience, confidence, emotional regulation and positive behaviour.
- Encourage participation in education through engaging activities, including practical and physical sessions where appropriate.
- Work collaboratively with teachers, parents, carers, social workers and external professionals to ensure consistent support for each student.
- Deliver mentoring both within the hub and through outreach work in the community.
- Monitor, review and record student progress through learning journals, intervention records and reports.
- Complete termly risk assessments.
- Prepare and deliver engaging learning activities and nurture sessions.
- Support students in achieving recognised accreditation, including Kings trust and NCFE qualifications.
- Maintain accurate daily registers and attendance records.
- Communicate effectively with parents and carers through telephone calls, emails and text messages.
- Contribute to safeguarding procedures, acting in accordance with Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE) guidance and reporting any concerns promptly to the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL).
- Attend CPD, mandatory training and professional development opportunities to continually enhance knowledge and practice.
Essential Requirements
- Full UK Driving Licence.
- Experience working with children or young people in education, youth work, mentoring or a similar setting.
- Experience supporting young people with SEMH needs, challenging behaviour or additional learning needs.
- Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
- Ability to remain calm, patient and resilient in challenging situations.
- Strong understanding of safeguarding and child protection responsibilities.
- Confident record keeping and report writing skills.
- Commitment to promoting inclusion, wellbeing and positive outcomes for all learners.
- Enhanced DBS check (or willingness to obtain one).
Desirable Skills & Experience
- Experience working within an Alternative Provision, PRU, specialist school or SEND setting.
- Qualifications in Education, Youth Work, Sports Coaching, Boxing Coaching, Outdoor Education or a related field is desired.
- Experience working with disadvantaged or vulnerable young people.
- Experience delivering intervention programmes that improve attendance, behaviour and emotional wellbeing.
- First Aid or Team Teach/Positive Behaviour Support training (desirable).
- Interest in sports, fitness or outdoor learning to support engagement activities.
