HGV Workshop Manager
Based at our Stoke-on-Trent depot, the HGV Workshop Manager will oversee the maintenance and repair of a diverse range of commercial vehicles. This is not a traditional fleet workshop; the successful candidate will be working across virtually every major HGV make, model and specification.
A broad technical knowledge and strong diagnostic ability are therefore essential. The role requires someone who can confidently deal with a wide variety of mechanical, electrical and electronic systems and find effective solutions to complex faults.
Manage and supervise HGV technicians, mechanics and workshop staff.
Plan and allocate daily maintenance and repair work.
Ensure vehicles are maintained in line with DVSA, MOT and operator-licensing requirements.
Monitor vehicle inspections, servicing, preventative maintenance and defect repairs.
Ensure all repairs are completed to a high standard and within required timescales.
Control workshop costs, labour, parts and external contractors.
Order parts and maintain appropriate stock levels.
Maintain accurate maintenance and vehicle records.
Investigate recurring mechanical faults and reduce vehicle downtime.
Carry out quality checks and ensure workshop health & safety procedures are followed.
Liaise with transport, fleet, drivers and senior management.
Manage breakdowns and roadside recovery where required.
Monitor workshop for time keeping maintenance costs and defects.
Ensure the workshop, tools and equipment are kept safe, clean and compliant.
Key skills and experience
A strong candidate would normally have:
Class 1 License
HGV maintenance/engineering experience.
Experience supervising or managing technicians.
Good knowledge of HGV mechanical and electrical systems.
Knowledge of DVSA and O-licence compliance.
Strong planning and organisational skills.
Leadership and people-management ability.
Good understanding of workshop costs and budgets.
Ability to work under pressure and prioritise vehicle repairs.
