About the Role
Re:Solve Hemel is seeking a committed, nurturing and resilient Learning Mentor to join our Alternative Provision team. This role is ideal for someone who is passionate about supporting young people who may have experienced barriers to education and who need a different approach to learning.
Working Monday to Friday, 12:00pm–4:00pm, the successful candidate will play an important role in helping young people re-engage with education, develop positive relationships and build the confidence and skills they need to progress.
Key Responsibilities
The Learning Mentor will:
- Build positive, trusting and professional relationships with young people.
- Provide consistent encouragement, structure and emotional support.
- Support learners to engage with their individual learning programmes.
- Help young people develop confidence, self-esteem, resilience and independence.
- Use positive behaviour-support strategies to manage and reduce challenging behaviour.
- Recognise potential triggers and respond calmly to signs of dysregulation or escalation.
- Support young people who may present with SEMH needs, anxiety, school avoidance or difficulties with emotional regulation.
- Adapt activities and communication to meet individual needs.
- Encourage learners to recognise and celebrate their strengths and achievements.
- Support social skills, communication, problem-solving and emotional literacy.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues to ensure learners receive consistent support.
- Maintain appropriate professional boundaries and follow safeguarding procedures.
- Record relevant observations, progress and concerns accurately.
- Contribute to creating a safe, welcoming and inclusive environment.
The Ideal Candidate
We are looking for someone who is:
- Patient, calm and emotionally regulated.
- Warm, approachable and able to build rapport with young people.
- Confident working with challenging or unpredictable behaviour.
- Non-judgemental and able to see the young person behind the behaviour.
- Resilient and able to remain consistent during difficult situations.
- Flexible and willing to adapt their approach to individual learners.
- A strong communicator and active listener.
- Able to maintain clear professional boundaries.
- Passionate about helping young people overcome barriers to education.
- Committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
- Able to work effectively as part of a small, supportive team.
Our Approach
At Re:Solve Hemel, we recognise that behaviour is communication. Rather than simply focusing on compliance, we aim to understand what may be driving a young person's behaviour and identify strategies that help them feel safe, understood and ready to engage.
Our approach is based on relationships, regulation, consistency and positive expectations. Staff are expected to model calm behaviour, use appropriate de-escalation strategies and provide young people with opportunities to experience success.
