We are seeking a versatile Facilities & Events Caretaker to join our team at our multipurpose events centre in Wimbledon. This is not a typical, behind-the-scenes caretaking role. You will be the heartbeat of our venue ensuring our building is safe, immaculate, and functional, while actively setting up the space for a diverse calendar of events.From bustling community hires and private corporate bookings to our own curated art exhibitions and themed cultural nights.
About the Role
As our Facilities & Event Operations Assistant, you will look after the physical health of our building while acting as a critical logistical anchor for our events. You will ensure the venue transitions smoothly between busy commercial venue hires and our internal cultural programming (such as art exhibitions and themed community days).This role requires a unique blend of facilities maintenance, proactive problem-solving, and event logistics. You will work closely with event organizers, artists, and patrons to keep our space safe, welcoming, and operating at a premium standard.
Key Responsibilities
1. Event Operations & Logistics
- Space Transformations: Efficiently set up and break down rooms according to event floor plans (moving furniture, staging, seating layouts, and exhibition display boards).
- Exhibition Assistance: Assist in preparing the gallery space for art exhibitions, including minor wall patching, painting, hanging layouts, and adjusting directional lighting.
- On-the-Day Support: Act as the primary point of contact for user-led event organizers, ensuring their AV, lighting, and layout needs are met.
- Themed Event Execution: Assist the management team in dressing the venue and preparing facilities for specialized internal themed days and evenings.
- Events Space Promotion: Welcome and show prospective events hirers around the premises and assist with answering questions about the venue
2. Facilities Care, Health & Safety
- Building Maintenance: Complete routine, hands-on DIY tasks (minor plumbing repairs, replacing light fixtures, repairing fixtures, and paint touch-ups).
- Compliance & Checks: Conduct and log daily/weekly health and safety checks, including fire alarms, emergency lighting, water hygiene (Legionella), and escape routes.
- Contractor Management: Escalate complex issues to specialist engineers (HVAC, electrical) and supervise them while they are on site.
- Cleanliness & Presentation: Maintain high standards of hygiene across the venue between bookings, ensuring toilets, main halls, and entryways are immaculate before guests arrive.
- Security & Keyholding: Manage the opening and locking up of the building, securing the perimeter, and setting alarm systems post-event.
Required Skills & Experience
- Proven Experience: At least 2 years of experience in a facilities caretaker, handyman, school site assistant, or venue operations role.
- Event Literacy: Previous experience working within a public-facing venue, arts centre, leisure hub, or events environment is highly desirable.
- Handyman Skills: Strong, demonstrable competence in basic building repairs, painting, decorating, and tool handling.
- Physical Fitness: This role involves manual handling, including lifting and shifting heavy event furniture, staging, and equipment daily.
- Tech Comfort: Ability to operate basic modern AV systems (projectors, microphones, soundboards) or a willingness to learn.
- Flexible Mindset: High comfort level working in an agile environment where the building's layout changes daily.
Hours & Compensation
- Salary: £15.80 per hour (dependent on experience).
- Job Type: Part -time, Temp.
- Schedule: 15 hours per week (plus overtime).
- Due to the nature of our events centre, this role requires a flexible rota including evenings, weekends, and occasional bank holidays aligned with scheduled exhibitions and themed nights.
