Hamilton Park Nursing Home is looking for an experienced, compassionate and confident Senior Healthcare Assistant to join our team on a full-time, permanent basis.
We are looking for someone who is passionate about delivering excellent, person-centred care and who is also confident taking responsibility for coordinating and supporting the care team throughout the shift.
This is a hands-on senior position. You will work closely with the nurse in charge and wider nursing team, helping to ensure that residents receive safe, dignified and individualised care and that expected standards are maintained across the floor.
Key Responsibilities
As a Senior Healthcare Assistant, you will:
- Lead, coordinate and support Healthcare Assistants throughout the shift, ensuring staff are appropriately allocated and residents' needs are met.
- Work alongside the nurse in charge and promptly escalate any concerns regarding a resident's health, behaviour, mobility, skin integrity, nutrition, hydration or general wellbeing.
- Deliver high-quality, person-centred care, including supporting residents with personal care, continence, mobility, repositioning, nutrition, hydration and activities of daily living.
- Promote residents' dignity, independence, choices and preferences at all times.
- Administer medication safely following successful completion of the required medication training and competency assessments.
- Complete and oversee accurate care documentation and ensure care provided is recorded appropriately.
- Check that required repositioning and pressure-area care has been completed and documented.
- Check residents' cream/topical treatment charts and ensure prescribed creams and emollients have been applied and recorded correctly.
- Check pressure-relieving mattresses and other equipment to ensure they are in place, functioning correctly and set appropriately for the resident.
- Monitor residents' skin condition and promptly report any redness, pressure damage, bruising, wounds or other concerns to the nurse in charge.
- Ensure residents receive appropriate personal care, including showers/baths, oral care, grooming and support to maintain their preferred appearance.
- Monitor continence care and ensure residents are checked and supported appropriately throughout the shift.
- Ensure call bells are answered promptly and residents are not left waiting unnecessarily for assistance.
- Support safe moving and handling practices and ensure staff use the correct equipment and follow residents' individual moving and handling plans.
- Support residents at mealtimes and ensure concerns regarding poor food or fluid intake are identified and escalated.
- Complete relevant observations and checks as delegated and within your training and competency.
- Provide clear and effective handovers and ensure important information is communicated to the nurse in charge and the wider care team.
- Support and guide less experienced staff, new starters and agency staff, setting a positive example of good care practice.
- Help maintain high standards of infection prevention and control, safeguarding, health and safety and confidentiality.
- Recognise changes or deterioration in a resident's condition and escalate concerns immediately to the nurse in charge.
- Communicate professionally and compassionately with residents, relatives, colleagues and visiting healthcare professionals.
- Take an active role on the floor rather than simply delegating tasks – our Senior Healthcare Assistants are expected to lead by example and work alongside their team.
About You
We are looking for someone who:
- Has previous experience working within a care home or nursing home environment.
- Ideally has previous experience as a Senior Healthcare Assistant or is an experienced Healthcare Assistant ready to progress.
- Has, or is working towards, Level 3 Health & Social Care or an equivalent qualification.
- Has experience of medication administration or is willing and able to complete the required training and competency assessment.
- Has a good understanding of person-centred care, safeguarding, dignity, infection prevention, pressure-area care and safe moving and handling.
- Is confident coordinating and supporting a care team.
- Can prioritise effectively during a busy shift and knows when concerns need to be escalated.
- Has good verbal and written communication skills and can maintain clear and accurate care records.
- Is reliable, organised, approachable and able to remain calm under pressure.
- Is genuinely compassionate and committed to maintaining high standards for our residents.
