We are seeking a hands-on Finance Manager to take ownership of the day-to-day finance function, working closely with an experienced part-time Finance Director (FCMA) who is planning retirement in the coming years. As part of the management team, you will report on financial performance to colleagues and contribute to operational and commercial decision-making.
The role offers significant development and increased responsibility over time, supported by mentoring and knowledge transfer from the Finance Director.
The Role
This is a broad, practical role suited to someone who enjoys working in a smaller business environment and taking real ownership.
Core Finance Responsibilities
· Preparation of monthly management accounts (P&L, balance sheet, KPIs, variance analysis)
· Cashflow forecasting and working capital management
· General ledger maintenance, including accruals, prepayments and reconciliations
· Oversight of payroll and statutory compliance (VAT, PAYE)
· Job costing, project profitability analysis and financial reporting
· Budgeting, forecasting and year-end support
· Preparation and presentation of financial information to the management team
Credit Control & Cash Management
The business currently operates with invoice finance. Following a planned exit from invoice finance, the Finance Manager will assume responsibility for credit control and debtor management. Over time, this will form a significant part of the role (approximately two days per week).
· Ownership of the order-to-cash process following exit from invoice finance
· Customer account reviews and credit risk management
· Hands-on, telephone-based debt collection
· Improving cash collection processes and reducing debtor days
Working Structure
· Reporting to a part-time Finance Director (FCMA)
· Line management responsibility for one Accounts Administrator (payroll processing, purchase ledger, sales ledger and banking)
· Significant autonomy in day-to-day operations with ongoing mentoring and support
· Close collaboration with non-finance colleagues as part of the management team
About You
· AAT qualified (MAAT), part-qualified, QBE or fully qualified (ACCA / CIMA / ACA)
· Proven experience producing management accounts independently
· Background in a hands-on SME finance role
· Confidence managing cashflow and, in due course, credit control
· Strong Excel skills and experience with accounting systems (Sage preferred)
