About the Role
We are seeking a proactive, organised, Maintenance Assistant to join our team at Student Castle Cambridge.
As part of a small and dedicated team, you will play a key role in supporting the day-to-day operation of the property, maintaining high standards across the building, and helping to deliver an exceptional living experience for our residents.
Reporting to the Property Manager, you will be responsible for delivering both planned and reactive maintenance across the property. This is a varied and practical role that requires strong all-round maintenance skills, a proactive approach to problem-solving, and the ability to work independently while supporting contractors and colleagues.
The successful candidate will spend the majority of their time undertaking maintenance duties, ensuring the building remains safe, compliant, and presented to the highest standard.
Key ResponsibilitiesMaintenance & Building Operations
- Carry out fault finding, repairs, and maintenance across the property.
- Deliver planned preventative maintenance and reactive maintenance works.
- Diagnose and repair building fabric defects and minor electrical issues.
- Undertake decoration, painting, and general repair works as required.
- Ensure all plant, equipment, and building systems are maintained and operated safely.
- Monitor and maintain the condition of resident accommodation and communal areas.
- Liaise with specialist contractors and oversee works to ensure quality and compliance.
- Support room turnarounds between check-outs and arrivals.
- Undertake Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) where qualified.
- Complete water hygiene tasks, including temperature monitoring, descaling, sampling, and testing in line with L8 ACoP requirements (following training and appointment).
- Undertake Authorised Person or Competent Person responsibilities where appointed.
- Maintain clean, safe, and organised work areas at all times.
- Provide support, guidance, and technical knowledge to colleagues where appropriate.
Health & Safety & Compliance
- Support compliance with all Health & Safety legislation, company policies, risk assessments, COSHH assessments, and safe systems of work.
- Conduct regular building inspections and patrols to identify and address hazards, defects, or compliance issues.
- Report health and safety concerns and trends to management.
- Assist with regular room inspections to monitor resident safety, property condition, cleanliness, and standards.
- Support fire safety arrangements, including routine inspections of firefighting equipment and fire detection systems.
- Issue and close Permit-to-Work documentation where required.
- Ensure all maintenance activities are carried out in accordance with company procedures and industry best practice.
Administration & Record Keeping
- Maintain accurate maintenance records and documentation.
- Complete job sheets and maintenance reports accurately and promptly.
- Monitor and report maintenance issues, defects, and contractor performance.
- Build positive professional relationships with residents, colleagues, contractors, and visitors.
- Participate in training, toolbox talks, and continuing professional development opportunities.
Essential Skills & Experience
- Previous experience within a multi-skilled maintenance environment.
- Practical experience carrying out general building maintenance and repairs.
- Strong problem-solving and fault-finding abilities.
- Good communication and customer service skills.
- GCSE Grade C/4 or above in English and Mathematics (or equivalent).
- Full UK Driving Licence.
- Commitment to maintaining high standards of health, safety, and customer service.
Desirable Skills & Qualifications
- Experience working within student accommodation, residential, hospitality, or facilities management environments.
- PAT Testing qualification.
- Knowledge of water hygiene and L8 compliance requirements.
- Experience with building services plant and equipment.
- Ability to diagnose and repair a range of mechanical, electrical, and building fabric faults.
- Understanding of statutory compliance and maintenance best practices.
