Are you a technically minded engineer who is just as comfortable working with software and systems as you are with physical equipment?
We’re working with a global technology manufacturer to recruit an experienced Workshop Engineer for its established technical operation in Bedford.
This is not a traditional nuts-and-bolts workshop role.
The technology behind the equipment is evolving rapidly, with increasing levels of software, connectivity, intelligent systems, and AI-driven functionality. As a result, we’re looking for someone with a strong practical engineering background who has naturally developed excellent software and IT skills alongside it.
You might currently work as a Workshop Engineer, Technical Engineer, Field Service Engineer, Product Support Engineer, Configuration Engineer, Test Engineer, or Technical Support Engineer.
The industry you come from is less important than your technical ability, reliability, and approach.
What Will You Be Doing?
You’ll become a trusted member of the technical team, taking significant ownership for equipment passing through the Bedford workshop.
Your role will include:
- Pre-staging and configuring sophisticated technical equipment ahead of customer installations
- Installing, configuring, and updating software and associated systems
- Setting equipment up to individual customer and installation requirements
- Troubleshooting both software and hardware issues
- Carrying out testing, validation and quality checks before equipment is released
- Diagnosing faults and identifying effective technical solutions
- Completing software, firmware, and equipment updates
- Maintaining, repairing, and upgrading demonstration and loan equipment
- Supporting technical evaluation and testing of new products
- Producing accurate configuration, testing, and technical documentation
- Working closely with field engineers, technical support, and project teams
- Providing occasional technical support in the field when required
- Attending manufacturer training to continually develop your product and systems knowledge
This is a role with real autonomy. You’ll be trusted to manage your workload, identify problems, take ownership, and ensure equipment is prepared correctly and on time.
What Are We Looking For?
We’re particularly interested in engineers who have developed a strong software and systems bias during their careers.
You don't need to be a software developer or programmer.
Instead, we're looking for someone who understands how modern software-driven equipment works and is confident configuring, testing, and troubleshooting the systems surrounding it.
Ideally, you'll bring experience in areas such as:
- Software installation and configuration
- Windows-based systems
- Hardware and software troubleshooting
- Networking and connectivity
- Software and firmware updates
- Systems or equipment configuration
- Testing and validation
- Diagnostics and root-cause analysis
- Hardware/software integration
- Electrical or electronic equipment
- Technical and quality documentation
Most importantly, you'll be dependable, organised, and comfortable working independently.
This is a key position within the operation, so we're looking for someone who takes pride in becoming the person the wider team can rely upon to get things right.
An HNC/BTEC Level 4 or equivalent qualification in Electrical/Electronic Engineering would be advantageous, although relevant hands-on experience will absolutely be considered in place of formal qualifications.
A full UK driving licence is required.
Your Background
We're deliberately keeping the industry background broad.
You could potentially come from:
- Digital print, imaging, or MFD equipment
- Electronics
- IT hardware
- Banking or cash-handling technology
- Medical or laboratory equipment
- Scientific instrumentation
- AV or imaging technology
- Automation
- Other sophisticated software-controlled capital equipment
Previous healthcare experience is not essential.
This could also be a particularly attractive move for an experienced Field Service Engineer who wants to come off the road without giving up the technical variety and problem-solving they enjoy.
