We are seeking a reliable and professional Driver/Yard Operative to join our team in Chadderton Oldham.

This is a varied role combining commercial driving, deliveries and collections, yard operations, equipment and stock control, PPE and consumables, and general stores support. The successful candidate will play an important part in ensuring our equipment, plant, tools and materials are safely stored, maintained, prepared and available to support our projects and operational requirements.The successful candidate will also be responsible for safely transporting goods and materials to various locations, ensuring timely deliveries while maintaining high standards of customer service.
Driving, Deliveries & Collections
- Operate company commercial vehicles, including flatbed lorries, safely and in accordance with road traffic regulations and company procedures.
- Plan and follow efficient routes to ensure timely and cost effective deliveries and collections.
- Safely load, unload and secure goods, equipment and materials using appropriate equipment and manual handling techniques.
- Carry out daily vehicle inspections, report defects or mechanical issues and undertake basic maintenance checks where appropriate.
- Maintain company vehicles in a clean, safe and roadworthy condition.
- Communicate effectively with clients, dispatchers, colleagues and project teams to coordinate deliveries and resolve logistical issues.
- Maintain accurate delivery, collection and transport documentation and logs in accordance with company and legal requirements.
Stores, Equipment & Stock
- Receive, check, catalogue and organise incoming equipment, tools, plant, PPE and consumables.
- Pick, prepare and issue equipment and materials for projects using requisition sheets.
- Maintain accurate stock records, databases and inventory systems.
- Monitor stock levels and assist with reordering to ensure equipment and materials are available when required.
- Ensure all equipment, tools, PPE and materials are correctly stored, clearly identified and securely maintained.
- Issue and record PPE and consumables to employees, operatives and subcontractors.
- Ensure PPE, tools and equipment are correctly branded, marked and allocated.
Equipment Inspection & Maintenance
- Carry out routine inspections, cleaning and basic maintenance of plant, power tools, electrical leads, cables, winches, blocks, fittings and other equipment.
- Maintain the quarantine area for defective equipment and ensure faults are reported and followed up..
- Ensure equipment is maintained in a safe and serviceable condition and report any items that require repair, testing or replacement.
Yard, Site & Compliance
- Maintain high standards of housekeeping throughout the stores,yard and Head Office site.
- Carry out regular stores/yard and site checks and report hazards, defects or health and safety concerns.
- Assist with van audits to ensure company vehicles contain the required PPE and equipment in good condition.
- Assist with COSHH requirements and ensure hazardous substances are stored safely and appropriately.
- Support waste management, recycling, bins and skips, keeping the site and yard clean and organised.
- Follow all company health and safety procedures and ensure safe working practices are maintained at all times.
Team & Operational Support
- Coordinate and assist with collections, deliveries and other logistical requirements.
- Work closely with the operations and project teams to ensure equipment, materials and PPE are prepared and available when required.
- Provide general support across the yard, stores and operational areas as required.
- Maintain a professional, organised and proactive approach to all duties.
Skills
- Proven experience in commercial driving, particularly as a delivery driver or similar role.
- A full and valid UK driving licence and experience driving commercial vehicles.
- A 7.5-tonne (C1) licence would be desirable.
- Mechanical knowledge to perform routine vehicle inspections and minor repairs.
- Experience operating flatbed vehicles or similar large transport equipment.
- Warehouse experience is advantageous for loading/unloading procedures.
- Excellent communication skills to liaise effectively with team members and clients.
- Ability to organise deliveries efficiently and adapt to changing schedules. - Experience with flatbed vehicles or similar vehicles would be advantageous.
