Job Summary
The Assistant Shift Manager is responsible for supporting the Shift Manager in the day-to-day leadership, coordination and performance of all production activities within their assigned shift, ensuring safe, efficient and high-quality manufacturing output that meets business objectives, customer requirements and operational targets.
This role exists to support operational excellence through strong floor leadership, effective communication, team coordination and proactive problem solving, while developing the capability, engagement and performance of production teams.
The Assistant Shift Manager plays a key role in ensuring production operations run safely and efficiently, supporting training and development activities, maintaining production standards and deputising for the Shift Manager when required.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
- Support the delivery of shift production targets for safety, quality, output, efficiency, and cost.
- Assist in leading and coordinating day-to-day production operations to ensure smooth and efficient workflow.
- Ensure safe production line start-up, shutdown, shift handovers, and compliance with site security procedures.
- Monitor production performance, identify issues, and escalate risks affecting safety, quality, or productivity.
- Support the management, coaching, training, and development of Line Leaders and Production Operatives.
- Promote employee engagement, accountability, teamwork, and company values
- Ensure compliance with Health & Safety legislation, GMP, quality standards, and company procedures.
- Act as a key escalation point for operational issues, working closely with Engineering, Planning, Warehouse, Supply Chain, and Quality teams.
- Monitor and report key operational KPIs including productivity, OEE, waste, downtime, quality, and safety performance.
- Deputise for the Shift Manager during periods of absence or as required by the business.
Experiance and Skills Required
- Proven ability to lead, motivate, and develop teams to achieve production and performance targets.
- Strong understanding of health & safety, quality, and operational compliance requirements.
- Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to identify issues, determine root causes, and implement effective solutions.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively across departments.
- Good organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Confident decision-maker with the ability to take ownership and deputise for the Shift Manager when required.
