Role Overview
A Builder Apprentice learns a broad range of practical construction skills while supporting experienced tradespeople on site. You will assist with general building tasks, preparation work, materials handling, basic repairs, and site housekeeping, while developing an understanding of drawings, setting out, safe working practices, quality standards, and how different trades work together to complete projects.
Key Responsibilities
· Assist qualified tradespeople with day-to-day building works on site.
· Help prepare work areas, move and organise materials, and keep sites clean, tidy and safe.
· Learn basic construction techniques including measuring, setting out, fixing, mixing, and using hand and power tools safely.
· Support general building, repair, maintenance and improvement works as instructed.
· Follow drawings, specifications, method statements and supervisor instructions appropriate to the task.
· Maintain tools and equipment, report defects, and store materials safely.
· Follow site safety rules, use PPE correctly, and report hazards, near misses or unsafe conditions.
· Work alongside different trades and supervisors, communicating clearly and showing a professional attitude on site.
· Attend college/training, complete required portfolio evidence, and apply learning to the workplace.
· Ask for guidance when unsure, identify problems early, and support quality checks to meet agreed standards.
Skills & Attributes
Essential
· Genuine interest in construction and learning a skilled building trade.
· Willingness to work outdoors in all weathers and carry out physically demanding tasks.
· Good practical skills and attention to detail, with a commitment to doing quality work.
· Ability to follow instructions, learn from feedback and ask questions when unsure.
· Basic numeracy and measuring skills; able to read simple drawings or willingness to learn.
· Good timekeeping, reliability and a positive attitude to teamwork.
· Strong focus on safety, including wearing PPE and following site rules and method statements.
Desirable (Not Essential)
· Some experience in construction, maintenance, landscaping, joinery, brickwork or use of basic hand tools (work, college or hobby).
· Full UK driving licence (or working towards) to travel to sites.
· Interest in building maintenance, refurbishment, housebuilding or general construction methods.
