We have an exciting post for an experienced Pharmacist Manager to take full clinical and operational ownership of our community pharmacy. You'll act as Responsible Pharmacist, lead a dispensary team, and drive both patient care and business performance — backed by a Superintendent Pharmacist and Board who want your input, not just your compliance.
Clinical & Professional
- Act as Responsible Pharmacist, ensuring the pharmacy operates in line with the Human Medicines Regulations 2012 and local SOPs
- Clinically check, accuracy-check and dispense prescription and OTC medicines
- Provide expert clinical advice to patients, carers and healthcare professionals on medicines optimisation, interactions and adherence
- Deliver commissioned NHS and local services — Pharmacy First, New Medicine Service, flu and vaccination services, smoking cessation, emergency contraception
- Manage Controlled Drugs in line with the Misuse of Drugs Regulations 2001, including running balances, destruction and denaturing records
- Exercise prescribing authority if you hold an Independent Prescribing qualification
Governance, Risk & Compliance
- Maintain full compliance with GPhC standards for registered pharmacies and pharmacy professionals
- Lead clinical governance activity — incident reporting, near-miss logging, root cause analysis and significant event analysis — embedding learning across the team
- Keep SOPs current, accessible and adhered to
- Support GPhC/CQC inspections, audits and NHS contract monitoring visits
- Maintain robust information governance and patient confidentiality in line with GDPR and Caldicott principles
- Act as a safeguarding point of contact, escalating concerns appropriately
People Leadership
- Provide day-to-day leadership, supervision and rota management for the dispensary and support team
- Recruit, induct, train, appraise and performance-manage pharmacy staff
- Identify and support training needs, including for technicians, dispensers and pre-registration trainees
- Foster an open, just culture that encourages reporting and learning from errors
- Chair or contribute to team meetings on governance, performance and service updates
Operational & Business Management
- Manage stock control, ordering, wastage and expiry-date checking
- Monitor pharmacy performance against operational and financial targets, including NHS item volumes and skill-mix efficiency
- Ensure premises, equipment and cold-chain storage meet regulatory and H&S standards
- Contribute to local business development, promoting commissioned and private services
- Maintain accurate records for NHS reimbursement and financial reporting
Stakeholder Engagement
- Build relationships with local GP practices, care homes and community health services
- Represent the pharmacy at local network, PCN or ICB meetings as required
- Handle patient complaints professionally, ensuring timely resolution and organisational learning
What we're looking for:
Essential:
- MPharm degree (or equivalent) and completed GPhC pre-registration training
- Current, unconditional GPhC registration
- Minimum 2 years' post-registration community pharmacy experience
- Sound working knowledge of UK medicines legislation and GPhC standards
- Working knowledge of the NHS community pharmacy contractual framework
- Strong clinical decision-making, leadership and communication skills
- Competent with pharmacy dispensing systems (e.g. EPS, PMR) and standard office software
- Willingness to act as Responsible Pharmacist and hold RP status
- Enhanced DBS check (or willingness to undergo one) and right to work in the UK
Desirable:
- Independent Prescribing qualification
- Previous experience as a Pharmacist Manager, Responsible Pharmacist or in a supervisory role
- Experience of budget management, stock control or P&L accountability
- Experience supporting pre-registration trainees
- Postgraduate diploma/certificate in clinical pharmacy or management
- Full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle
