Fire Risk Assessor
Location: Southampton, with travel to client sites
Employment: Permanent, part time
Working pattern: Ideally 2 to 3 days per week, with flexibility by agreement

Salary: Range from 42,000-46,000 FTE, pro rata's to number of hours.

We do not believe that a good fire risk assessment is simply an exercise in compliance or ticking boxes. Our role is to help clients understand their fire risk, make sensible and proportionate decisions, and ultimately create safer buildings.

The Role
We are looking for an experienced Fire Risk Assessor to join our team on a permanent, part time basis.
You will undertake fire risk assessments across a range of premises, working directly with clients to understand their buildings, activities and risks.
This is not simply a role for somebody who can inspect a building and produce a report. We are looking for somebody who can think critically about fire risk, communicate their reasoning clearly and give clients proportionate, practical advice.
You will have the confidence to explain not only what a client should do, but why it matters and, where appropriate, help them consider different ways of achieving an appropriate level of fire safety.
You will be trusted to manage your assessments professionally and represent SC positively with our clients.
Key Responsibilities
Your responsibilities will include:
- Carrying out suitable and sufficient fire risk assessments across a variety of premises
- Identifying significant fire hazards, people at risk and appropriate control measures
- Assessing existing fire precautions and determining whether they are suitable and proportionate to the risk
- Producing clear, accurate and practical fire risk assessment reports
- Developing sensible and prioritised recommendations rather than simply creating lists of deficiencies
- Explaining findings and recommendations clearly to clients, including the reasoning behind them
- Building strong and trusted relationships with clients
- Reviewing relevant drawings, information and documentation where required
- Applying current fire safety legislation, recognised guidance and relevant standards appropriately
- Recognising where a situation requires additional specialist advice and escalating appropriately
- Working collaboratively with other members of the SC team
- Maintaining appropriate records of assessments and client communications
- Keeping your professional knowledge and competence current through CPD and professional development
- Contributing to the continual improvement of SC’s assessment methodology, reporting and client service
The Person We Are Looking For
We are looking for somebody with proven experience carrying out fire risk assessments who takes professional competence seriously.
You should be comfortable making professional judgements and able to explain and defend the reasoning behind your recommendations.
Just as importantly, you should enjoy dealing with people. Many of our clients are not fire safety specialists and part of our job is making a complicated subject understandable without unnecessarily frightening people or creating work they do not need.
You are likely to be someone who:
- Has demonstrable experience undertaking fire risk assessments
- Has a good working knowledge of UK fire safety legislation and recognised fire safety guidance
- Understands the importance of risk based and proportionate decision making
- Produces clear, well reasoned written reports
- Communicates confidently and professionally with clients
- Is comfortable explaining technical matters in straightforward language
- Has good professional judgement and knows the limits of their own competence
- Is organised and capable of managing their own workload
- Is curious and willing to challenge assumptions where appropriate
- Takes pride in the quality of their work
- Has high standards of professional integrity
- Wants to continue learning and developing professionally
Professional Registration
Registration with the Institute of Fire Safety Managers (IFSM) or inclusion on the National Fire Risk Assessors Register (NFRAR) would be an advantage.
However, we are equally interested in experienced and capable assessors who are working towards appropriate professional registration.
Where somebody has the right experience, competence and attitude, SC will actively support their continued professional development and progression towards appropriate registration.
Working Arrangements
This is intended to be a genuinely flexible, part time employed position.
We envisage the successful person working approximately 2 to 3 days per week, but we are open to alternative arrangements.
For example, five days across a fortnight may suit somebody better than fixed weekly days.
We recognise that flexibility means different things to different people and would rather agree a working arrangement that suits both SC and the successful candidate than impose an unnecessarily rigid pattern.
The role will be based from our Southampton office, with travel to client premises as required.
