Salary: £47,340 plus benefits- Contract: Permanent, full time
- Working Hours: 1 week on/1 week off or 2 weeks on/2 weeks off – depending on the vessel you are allocated to
Are you an experienced seafarer looking for your next challenge? We're seeking a motivated, safety-focused Deck Rating (Small Ferry) to join our Western Isles Fleet on a permanent basis.
This is a varied and rewarding role where you'll be at the heart of vessel operations, contributing to the safe and efficient delivery of our lifeline ferry services. From mooring and vehicle deck operations to passenger assistance and safety duties, you'll play a key role in ensuring every journey runs smoothly while delivering an excellent experience for our customers.
Working as part of a professional and supportive crew, you'll help connect communities, support local economies, and operate in some of Scotland's most stunning coastal locations.
What You'll Be Doing
As a Deck Rating, you'll support the day-to-day operation of the vessel by:

Assisting with mooring operations, rope handling and deck machinery.
- Supporting vehicle loading, unloading and vehicle deck activities.
- Carrying out planned maintenance tasks as directed by the Bosun.
- Participating in emergency drills and responding to onboard emergencies as required.
- Assisting passengers safely between vehicle and passenger areas, including supporting passengers with reduced mobility.
- Undertaking bridge watchkeeping duties and vehicle deck inspections during voyages.
- Carrying out security gangway duties when required.
- Supporting the wider crew with any additional duties requested by the Master or Head of Department.

Valid ENG1 Medical Certificate (unrestricted)
- STCW II/5 Able Seafarer Deck Certificate of Competency
- Navigational Watch Rating Certificate
- Efficient Deck Hand Certificate
- STCW Personal Survival Techniques
- STCW Fire Prevention & Fire Fighting
- STCW Elementary First Aid
- STCW Personal Safety & Social Responsibilities (PSSR)
- STCW Security Awareness
- STCW Proficiency in Survival Craft & Rescue Boats
- STCW Crowd Management
- STCW Crisis Management & Human Behaviour
- STCW Passenger Safety, Cargo Safety & Hull Integrity
- STCW Designated Security Duties
- STCW Fast Rescue Boats

Skills and Experience
We're looking for someone who is safety-conscious, customer-focused and enjoys working as part of a team. You'll have strong communication skills, experience working in a marine environment, and a proactive approach to both safety and customer care. Experience acting up in a higher-grade role would be advantageous, along with familiarity with the Code of Safe Working Practices (CoSWP), permit-to-work systems, and risk assessment processes.
