Syntech Recruitment is partnering with a specialist manufacturing business in Ash Vale to recruit a skilled Manual Machinist / Toolroom Engineer to join their precision engineering team.
If you are a talented machinist who prides yourself on the craftsmanship of manual machining, this role offers a stable, structured environment where you can work on varied, high-precision components. You will play a key role in producing bespoke parts to exceptionally fine tolerances, bringing technical drawings to life.
Manual Machinist Responsibilities
- Set and operate manual toolroom machinery (including manual mills, lathes, and grinding machines) to produce high-quality, low-volume components.
- Carry out precision grinding operations, including surface, cylindrical, and internal/bore grinding as part of the manufacturing process.
- Perform high-tolerance honing work on components in line with technical specifications.
- Read and accurately interpret complex engineering drawings and blueprints to plan your machining setup.
- Take ownership of your work by utilizing standard measuring and inspection equipment to self-inspect parts to exceptionally tight tolerances.
- Work self-sufficiently on bespoke, small-batch tasks while collaborating effectively with a close-knit engineering team.
- Manage your workload efficiently to meet customer delivery schedules and production deadlines.
Manual Machinist Requirements
- Proven background as a Manual Machinist, Toolroom Machinist, or Manual Turner/Miller.
- Solid, hands-on experience with manual machinery, including grinding equipment (Surface, Cylindrical, or Internal).
- Demonstrated ability to work to exceptionally fine tolerances (high-precision machining).
- Strong proficiency in reading and interpreting technical engineering drawings.
- Ability to work independently, setup your own machines, and use precision measuring equipment to inspect your own work.
- Apprentice-trained or deeply qualified by experience (QBE) within an engineering/manufacturing environment.
- A proactive, craftsman-like attitude with a strong problem-solving mindset.
Desirable Skills
- Familiarity with both traditional manual toolroom machinery and modern CNC grinding/machining equipment.
- Experience working on bespoke, small-batch, or high-precision component manufacturing.
- Previous experience in a fast-paced, high-quality engineering environment.
