About the role
The Practical Skills Team Leader is responsible for leading and supporting the delivery of high-quality practical and vocational learning programmes across Springboard's curriculum areas, which include construction, workshop skills, hair and beauty and other practical skills provision.
The role combines teaching, coaching and operational leadership responsibilities. The successful candidate will supervise and develop a team of tutors and learning support staff, support curriculum development, monitor quality and learner outcomes, and contribute directly to positive learning experiences, learning and assessment activities.
Key Responsibilities
Team Leadership
- Lead, motivate and support a team of tutors and practical skills staff.
- Provide day-to-day supervision, coaching and mentoring to team members.
- Support staff performance through observations, feedback and professional development activities.
- Promote a positive, supportive and collaborative team culture.
- Contribute to staff recruitment, induction and probation processes as required.
- Support the implementation of organisational policies and procedures.
Curriculum Development and Quality Improvement
- Lead curriculum development across designated practical skills areas.
- Ensure programmes meet the needs of learners, employers and local labour market demands.
- Monitor teaching, learning, assessment and learner progress to ensure high standards are maintained.
- Support quality assurance activities, including observations, learning walks, audits and internal quality processes.
- Use quality and performance data to identify improvement actions and share best practice.
- Contribute to self-assessment, quality improvement planning and inspection readiness.
Teaching, Learning and Learner Support
- Deliver high-quality teaching, learning and assessment where required.
- Support learners to achieve their qualifications and personal development targets.
- Promote high standards of attendance, punctuality, behaviour and engagement.
- Ensure learning environments are safe, inclusive and conducive to learning.
- Support learners with SEND, SEMH needs and barriers to participation.
- Participate in all stages of the learner journey, including recruitment, induction, reviews, progression and destination tracking.
Performance Monitoring and Reporting
- Monitor learner recruitment, retention, attendance, achievement and progression data.
- Maintain accurate records and learner documentation.
- Produce reports and management information as required.
- Ensure compliance with awarding organisation, funding, quality and inspection requirements.
Partnership Working
- Work collaboratively with internal teams to promote programmes and support learner recruitment.
- Develop effective relationships with schools, employers, referral partners and other stakeholders.
- Contribute to the development and growth of Springboard's practical skills provision.
Safeguarding, Health and Safety
- Promote and safeguard the welfare of children, young people and adults.
- Maintain a strong understanding of safeguarding responsibilities in line with Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE).
- Ensure all practical learning environments operate safely and comply with health and safety requirements.
- Promote equality, diversity and inclusion throughout all aspects of the role.
- Undertake any other duties commensurate with the responsibilities of the post.
PERSON SPECIFICATION
Essential
Qualifications
- Level 3 qualification (or above) in a relevant vocational or practical skills area.
- Teaching or training qualification (Level 3 Award in Education and Training or equivalent).
- Assessor qualification or willingness to work towards.
- English and Maths qualification at Level 2 or above.
Experience
- Experience of delivering practical or vocational training within at least one of the following areas:
- Construction
- Workshop Skills
- Hair and Beauty
- Experience of supporting learners to achieve positive outcomes.
- Experience of monitoring learner progress and performance.
- Experience of working with children, young people or adults in an education or training environment.
- Experience of supporting or mentoring staff, trainees or colleagues.
- Experience of programme planning and curriculum delivery.
Knowledge and Skills
- Understanding of effective teaching, learning and assessment practices.
- Knowledge of safeguarding and learner welfare responsibilities.
- Knowledge of health and safety within practical learning environments.
- Strong organisational and planning skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to analyse performance data and identify improvement actions.
- Ability to motivate and inspire both learners and staff.
- Ability to work collaboratively across teams and with external partners.

Qualifications
- Internal Quality Assurance (IQA) qualification.
- Leadership or management qualification.
Experience
- Experience of leading or supervising staff.

- Experience of curriculum development and quality improvement planning.
- Experience of working with learners with SEND and/or SEMH needs.
- Experience of employer engagement and partnership working.
