Job Summary
We’re looking for a talented and passionate Sous Chef to join the kitchen team at Roots. Working alongside our Head Chef, you’ll play a key role in delivering the fresh, seasonal food that makes Roots a destination café.
This is a hands-on role for someone who thrives in a fast-paced kitchen, leads by example, and takes pride in producing beautifully presented dishes using high-quality, locally sourced ingredients. You'll help oversee the day-to-day running of the kitchen, support and inspire the team, and ensure every plate reflects the creativity, consistency, and care that define our menus.

Duties
- Support the Head Chef in creating and delivering fresh, seasonal menus that showcase the very best locally sourced ingredients.
- Lead and inspire the kitchen team, providing day to day guidance, training, and support to maintain a positive and productive working environment.
- Help oversee the smooth running of the kitchen, ensuring efficient service and consistently high standards throughout every shift.
- Prepare and present dishes with creativity, precision, and exceptional attention to detail, ensuring every plate reflects the Roots ethos.
- Maintain the highest standards of food hygiene, health and safety, and kitchen organisation, ensuring full compliance with all food safety regulations.
- Assist with stock management, ordering, and inventory control, helping to minimise waste and maximise efficiency.
- Take an active, hands-on role during service, supporting the team to deliver an outstanding dining experience, even during the busiest periods.
- Ensure every dish leaving the kitchen is of the highest quality, beautifully presented, and exceeds our guests' expectations.
Skills
- Previous experience in a Sous Chef or senior kitchen supervisory role within a busy, professional kitchen.
- A genuine passion for creating fresh, seasonal food and delivering consistently high standards.
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate, support, and develop those around you.
- Excellent knowledge of food hygiene, health and safety, and kitchen best practices.
- A calm and organised approach, with the ability to prioritise effectively and thrive during busy services.
- Confidence in managing stock, reducing waste, and supporting the efficient day-to-day running of the kitchen.
- A collaborative team player who leads by example and is always willing to roll up their sleeves.
- Pride in producing beautifully presented dishes that delight our guests and reflect the Roots ethos.
