The Churnet Valley Railway is looking for a dependable, practical and enthusiastic person to join our engineering department at Cheddleton.
You will work predominantly within our carriage and wagon workshops, helping to maintain, repair and restore our historic railway vehicles. You will also assist with work on our steam locomotives and undertake other engineering work when required.
Previous experience of railway carriages or steam locomotives is not essential. We are much more interested in finding someone with practical ability, a good attitude and a genuine willingness to learn.
You may already work in an engineering, mechanical or woodworking environment, but you do not need to be a time-served engineer or qualified tradesperson. You could equally be an enthusiastic and capable DIYer who enjoys making, repairing or restoring things.
Perhaps you have a welding set, lathe or small milling machine at home, undertake vehicle repairs or woodworking projects, or simply enjoy understanding how things work. If you appreciate the importance of using the right tool for the job and take pride in seeing work through to completion, we would like to hear from you.
Main responsibilities
Your work will include:
- Assisting with the maintenance, repair and restoration of railway carriages and wagons.
- Supporting the maintenance and overhaul of steam locomotives when required.
- Undertaking practical mechanical, electrical, fabrication and woodworking tasks.
- Repairing and replacing timber components, panels, fittings and other parts of historic railway vehicles.
- Using hand tools, power tools and workshop machinery safely and appropriately.
- Selecting the correct tools, materials and methods for each task.
- Working alongside experienced members of our engineering team.
- Following workshop procedures and health and safety requirements.
- Keeping tools, equipment and work areas clean, safe and properly organised.
- Taking responsibility for assigned work and seeing jobs through to completion.
- Learning new skills and being willing to undertake a varied range of work.
Training will be provided in the safe use of workshop machinery and specialist equipment as required. You will not be expected to operate machinery for which you have not received appropriate instruction or training.

- Committed to working safely and maintaining good standards.
- The holder of a full UK driving licence, ideally with no current penalty points.
Formal qualifications and previous railway experience would be welcome, but they are not essential.
Pay: £27,000.00-£30,000.00 per year
