Project Manager – Highways Improvement / Public Realm Works
Location: Harwich/Dovercourt, Essex
Contract Type: Fixed-Term Contract or Freelance (Self-Employed)
Duration: Immediate start until December 2026
Rate: Competitive day rate, dependent on experience
About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Project Manager to lead the delivery of a highways improvement/public realm scheme. This is an excellent opportunity for a proactive individual with a proven track record of successfully delivering similar civil engineering and public realm projects.
The successful candidate will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the project, ensuring works are delivered safely, on programme, within budget, and to the required quality standards.
Scope of Works
The project includes a range of public realm and highways improvement works, including:
- Kerbing and edging
- Paving and footway construction
- Installation of tree pits and associated infrastructure
- Drainage works
- Road and footway surfacing
- General public realm improvements
Key Responsibilities
- Manage the day-to-day delivery of the project from site commencement through to completion.
- Coordinate site teams, subcontractors, suppliers, and client representatives.
- Procure materials and subcontractors in line with programme requirements.
- Develop, maintain, and update project programmes.
- Produce regular progress reports and attend client progress meetings.
- Monitor project costs and assist in maintaining budget control.
- Ensure works are carried out in accordance with health, safety, environmental, and quality standards.
- Review and monitor RAMS, permits, and site documentation.
- Demonstrate a sound understanding of temporary works procedures and lifting operations.
- Identify project risks and implement mitigation measures.
- Maintain effective communication with stakeholders and ensure minimal disruption to the public during construction.
Essential Requirements
- Proven experience as a Project Manager delivering highways improvement and public realm schemes.
- Strong background in civil engineering works, including kerbing, paving, drainage, tree pit installation, and surfacing.
- Experience managing subcontractors and procuring materials.
- Ability to programme works and monitor progress against key milestones.
- Excellent organisational, communication, and leadership skills.
- Thorough understanding of CDM Regulations and construction health and safety requirements.
- Knowledge of temporary works procedures and lifting operations.
- Full UK driving licence.
Desirable
- SMSTS qualification.
- CSCS Black or Gold Card
- Temporary Works Coordinator (TWC) training.
- First Aid at Work qualification.
- NRSWA Supervisor accreditation (advantageous).
