About Adrodd
Adrodd is a new digital language-learning app dedicated to helping learners build confidence in Welsh through engaging, level-appropriate stories.
Whether it is on the way to work or on a lunch break, Adrodd offers bitesize stories for learners to read and listen to. Not only will a broad catalogue of stories be available, users will also have access to one-click translations, definitions, grammar rules, creating flashcard decks, and tracking their progress.
We are commissioning high-quality graded readers designed specifically for adults and teenagers learning Welsh.

The Role
We are seeking to commission talented Welsh-language writers to create:
- Original graded reader stories.
And/or,
- Adaptations of public-domain classics (e.g. ‘The Monkey’s Paw’ by W. W. Jacobs).
Stories will typically contain around 10-12 chapters and have approximately 3000 words total, depending on the level. There are 5 graded reader levels with the first having 150 unique words in each story and the final having up to 2500 unique words.
For adaptations, writers will simplify the story to the appropriate length and translate both the language and cultural context to a Welsh setting.
We are looking for a range of dialects to show off the diversity of written and spoken Welsh today. Whether you are an up and coming writer or have a lot of experience writing graded readers we are interested in hearing from you!
Adrodd will retain all rights to the works created. This means any stories written or produced will be for the sole purposes of Adrodd and any further distribution will require Adrodd’s prior written permission.
What We’re Looking For
- Fluent Welsh speaker/writer
- Strong creative writing ability.
- Ability to write with controlled vocabulary appropriate to CEFR levels.
- Reliable and able to meet deadlines.
Desirable (but not essential):
- Experience teaching Welsh or other languages.
- Experience writing graded readers or other educational materials.
Compensation
Pay will depend on the writer’s experience, whether it’s an original or adaptation and the story length.
Approx range: £250 - £600.
Repeat work available for strong contributors.
