About the role
We are looking for a reliable, enthusiastic and caring Class Assistant to join our friendly team at Kumon St Helens.
This is a varied and rewarding role where no two sessions are exactly the same. You will work with children from approximately 3 to 12 years old, helping them develop confidence, independence and strong Maths and English skills.
Some children who attend Kumon are working to strengthen areas they currently find difficult, while others are working ahead of their school year. Our role is to understand each child as an individual, recognise their goals and help them make progress towards their full potential.
We are therefore looking for someone who genuinely enjoys working with children and understands how much of a difference the right encouragement can make.
Perhaps you have had a teacher, tutor or mentor who changed the way you felt about a subject or helped you believe in yourself. We are looking for someone who would like the opportunity to have that same positive impact on another child.
Your responsibilities
As a Class Assistant, your role may include:
- Supporting children with their Kumon Maths and English work
- Working individually with students ranging from Early Learners to more independent students
- Encouraging students to think for themselves rather than simply giving them answers
- Helping children develop confidence, concentration and independent learning skills
- Marking and recording student work accurately
- Providing appropriate feedback to students
- Communicating with parents and providing feedback about their child's classwork and progress
- Preparing work and resources for class
- Supporting the smooth running of the classroom
- Prioritising tasks during busy class sessions
- Working closely with other members of the Kumon team
- Learning different areas of the centre and developing your responsibilities over time
Full training will be provided.
What we are looking for
The successful applicant will:
- Have good Maths and English skills
- Be confident communicating with both children and adults
- Enjoy working with children
- Be patient, positive and encouraging
- Be reliable and punctual
- Be able to work as part of a team
- Be able to use their own initiative
- Be able to prioritise tasks when the classroom is busy
- Be willing to learn and develop within the role
- Be able to work independently once trained
- Have some availability on every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday
You do not need previous tutoring or teaching experience.
Previous experience of tutoring, childcare, education or working with young people would be beneficial, as would previous experience of the Kumon programme as a student or parent, but none of these are essential.
Who might this role suit?
This role could be particularly suitable for:
- Sixth-form or Year 12/13 students looking to build meaningful work experience
- University students looking for regular part-time work alongside their studies
- Someone considering a future career involving children or young people
- Someone looking to strengthen their CV through long-term employment and genuine responsibility
Many members of our team stay with us for several years, and we value people who want to grow in confidence, responsibility and experience while they are with us.
What you can gain from the role
Working at Kumon gives you much more than general part-time work experience.
You will have opportunities to develop:
- Communication skills
- Confidence when speaking to parents and children
- Leadership skills
- Time management
- Teamwork
- Problem-solving
- Organisation and prioritisation
- Responsibility
- Initiative
- Experience supporting children's learning and development
As you gain experience, there may also be opportunities to learn different parts of the centre, including working with Early Learners, independent students, marking, administration and front-desk responsibilities.
Hours
The role will initially be approximately 2–4 hours per week, with the possibility of increasing to up to 7.5 hours per week as the centre grows and depending on availability.
Our class opening hours are:
Monday: 3:45pm–7:00pm
Tuesday: 3:45pm–6:30pm
Wednesday: 3:45pm–6:30pm
You do not need to work the full session on each day.
However, because of the way our staffing and student schedules operate, applicants must be able to work some hours across all three days: Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
Please include your earliest available start time and latest available finish time for each day when applying.
What we would like to know about you
We are interested not only in your qualifications or previous experience, but also in why you want to work with children.
In your application, please tell us:
- Why you would like to work at Kumon
- Why you enjoy, or think you would enjoy, working with children
- Your availability on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday
- Any relevant experience you may have
We are looking for someone who wants to become a genuine part of the team and make a positive difference to the children who attend our centre.
If you are enthusiastic, dependable, willing to learn and passionate about helping children succeed, we would love to hear from you.
Pay: £8.00-£12.75 per hour
