Job Summary
We are recruiting a Trade Counter Sales Assistant to join our busy builders merchant trade counter and yard team in Walsham-le-Willows.
Clarkes of Walsham Ltd is one of the largest independent building and agricultural merchants in East Anglia, supplying trade and retail customers with a wide range of materials and products.
This role is ideal for someone with customer service, retail, trade counter, or construction supply experience, or someone looking to build a career in the builders merchant sector.
The Role
As a Trade Counter Sales Assistant, you will:
- Serve trade and retail customers at the trade counter and in the yard
- Provide pricing, product information, and basic technical advice
- Process sales orders and payments accurately
- Assist customers with loading goods safely
- Support stock handling and general yard operations
- Build strong customer relationships and repeat business
About You
We are looking for someone who is:
- Customer-focused with strong communication skills
- Confident working in a busy trade counter or retail environment
- Willing to learn product knowledge (building & agricultural materials)
- Reliable, flexible, and a strong team player
- Positive with a “can-do” attitude
Essential Requirements
- Good basic Maths and English
- Basic IT skills
- Ability to work Saturdays (2 per month)
- Good communication and customer service skills
- Right to work in the UK
Desirable Experience
- Trade counter, builders merchant, retail sales, or customer service experience
- Knowledge of building materials, construction, or agricultural supplies
- Experience working in a yard or manual environment
- Forklift licence (preferred but not essential – training provided)
