Purpose of the job:
To lead and manage the engineering function during the assigned shift, ensuring the safe, reliable and efficient operation of all manufacturing equipment and site utilities. The Engineering Shift Manager is responsible for minimising downtime, driving continuous improvement, and ensuring compliance with health, safety, environmental, food manufacturing and engineering standards.
The role provides leadership, technical support and coaching to the engineering team while working closely with Production, Quality and Operations teams to maximise Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE), asset reliability and plant performance.
Key Tasks & Responsibilities include:
- Lead and supervise the engineering team during the shift, ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently and to the required standard.
- Coordinate planned preventative maintenance (PPM) and reactive maintenance activities to minimise downtime and maximise equipment availability.
- Respond promptly to equipment breakdowns, identify root causes and implement sustainable corrective actions.
- Ensure all engineering work complies with food manufacturing standards, health and safety legislation and company policies.
- Monitor equipment performance and identify opportunities to improve reliability, efficiency and OEE.
- Manage engineering priorities in collaboration with Production to maximise manufacturing performance.
- Maintain accurate maintenance records, shift handover documentation and CMMS records.
- Coach, mentor and develop engineers and apprentices to improve technical capability and performance.
- Support the implementation of engineering projects, equipment installations and commissioning activities.
- Ensure engineering spare parts, tools and consumables are effectively managed and available when required.
- Promote and support continuous improvement initiatives across the site.
- Support site audits and ensure engineering standards are maintained at all times.
Management responsibility:
- Ensure full compliance with all health, safety and environmental requirements.
- Deliver engineering KPIs including downtime reduction, PM compliance, MTTR, MTBF and asset reliability.
- Lead daily engineering shift meetings and facilitate effective shift handovers.
- Conduct and review risk assessments, permit-to-work activities and LOTO procedures.
- Lead Root Cause Analysis (RCA) investigations and drive corrective actions.
- Promote a proactive maintenance culture focused on reliability and continuous improvement.
- Support customer, regulatory and internal audits.
- Ensure engineers are trained, competent and working to agreed standards and procedures.
- Monitor maintenance expenditure and identify opportunities to reduce waste and improve cost effectiveness.
- Foster strong working relationships with Production, Quality and Operations teams.
- Maintain high standards of housekeeping within workshops and plant areas.
- Act as the engineering lead during the shift, making informed decisions to maintain production continuity and site safety.
- Manage performance, attendance and conduct within the engineering team in line with company policies.
- Support succession planning and talent development within the engineering function.
