Paint Prepper - Ecclesfield & Barnsley
About Hartwell
Hartwell Manufacturing is a family-run engineering business with nearly 50 years of experience delivering high-quality acoustic enclosures and heavy steel fabrication projects. From our Ossett headquarters, we support clients in the power, data centre and industrial sectors with engineered solutions built on precision, collaboration and reliability. The culture is hands-on, team-focused and proud of the work we produce.
The Role
We are looking for an experienced Paint Prepper to join our team in Sheffield, reporting to the Paint Supervisor. The role may involve travel to a second site in Barnsley as required, please only apply if this travel would also be possible. The secondary site is based just off Junction 37 of the M1.
This is a hands-on role preparing large steel fabrications and structures before painting. We are looking for someone who has already worked in a similar practical environment and is confident using air tools, sanders, grinders and other preparation equipment.
This role would suit someone with experience in industrial paint preparation, metal preparation, fabrication prep, bodyshop prep, shotblast support, fettling, sanding, masking or general engineering/manufacturing preparation work.
It is important that candidates understand the pace and standards of a busy production environment. We need someone reliable, practical and willing to get stuck in, but also someone who takes pride in doing the job properly.
Key Responsibilities
Preparing large steel structures and fabricated components ready for painting
Using air tools, sanders, grinders and other hand or power tools safely and effectively
Sanding, scraping, fettling, masking, washing down and degreasing steelwork
Working from instructions, job requirements and customer specifications
Ensuring surfaces are correctly prepared before painting
Supporting the Paint Supervisor and wider paint team with production priorities
Maintaining good housekeeping standards in the paint preparation area
Following health and safety procedures at all times
Working at height or in confined spaces when required
Handling materials safely and working efficiently to production deadlines
What We’re Looking For
Previous hands-on experience in paint preparation, metal preparation, fettling, fabrication, engineering, bodyshop work or a similar industrial environment
Experience using air tools, sanders, grinders or similar preparation equipment is essential
A practical, reliable and hard-working attitude
Someone who is comfortable working on large steel fabrications and heavy industrial products
Good attention to detail and pride in the quality of their work
Ability to follow instructions properly and work to production standards
A team player who can also work independently when needed
Comfortable working in a busy manufacturing or engineering environment
Able to work at heights and/or in confined spaces where required
A forklift truck licence would be advantageous, but is not essential

This is not a general labouring role. We are looking for candidates who already have similar hands-on experience using tools such as air sanders, grinders, DA sanders, needle guns or other preparation equipment within an industrial, engineering, fabrication, manufacturing or bodyshop environment.
