We're Hiring – Locomotive Technician (Mechanical or Electrical Bias)
Exciting opportunities await at our HNRC Swietelsky division! We’re looking for skilled Locomotive Technicians - Electrical/Mechanical and Electrical to join our team at Worksop Traincare & Traction Depot / Barrow Hill Depot.
As HNRC Swietelsky continues to grow and diversify its operations, we are particularly interested in candidates who can bring additional skills, experience and competencies across a range of locomotive classes, rolling stock, plant, and associated engineering disciplines. The successful candidate will play a key role in supporting our expanding capabilities and future development plans.
Key Responsibilities: -
- Undertake maintenance, repair, fault finding and modifications of locomotive fleet including, but not limited to Class 08, Class 20, Class 37, Class 47, and Class 56 and rolling stock, ensuing it is carried out to the highest standards in accordance with company policy, industry, and rail group standards.
- Diagnosis and repair of DC Traction systems, generators, alternators, low-voltage and control circuits
- Accurately record all work carried out.
- Engage with, understand and adhere to all safety notices, rules and regulations.
- Ensure excellent standards of housekeeping are maintained in relation to safe systems of work and company best practice.
- Work with line management and the wider teams to identify areas of improvement relating to the examination and repair of company owned and third-party assets.
- If required to achieve personal track safety and designated person certification.
- Attend call outs to incidents as and when required.
- Familiarise with all relevant engineering procedures relating to locomotive and rolling stock maintenance and repair, depot protection, housekeeping, risk assessments, COSSH assessments and methods of work.
- To perform other duties as required which are reasonable in relation to the individual’s competence, skills and role.

1. Delivery of all contracted work to agreed specification.
2. Operational Safety not compromised.
3. All work is undertaken in accordance with safety procedures and relevant legislation.
4. Identify and agree key success criteria to provide a further measure of performance within the Company.
PERSONAL SPECIFICATION:
Mechanical Bias Candidates
Experience maintaining rotating equipment, pumps, conveyors, gearboxes, bearings, hydraulics and pneumatics.
Competence in fabrication, welding, and mechanical assembly would be advantageous.
Electrical Bias Candidates
Experience with electrical fault finding.
Knowledge of industrial electrical systems and safe isolation procedures.
- Skills and Experience
- Time-served apprenticeship or recognised qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Maintenance Engineering or a related discipline.
- NVQ in a relevant discipline or the willingness to achieve a qualification.
- Experience of working with the Loco classes listed.
- Strong fault-finding and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, schematics, and manuals.
- Good communication skills and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Flexible approach to working hours and call-outs if required.
