About the Role
We are looking for a reliable, organised and safety-conscious Gate Control Operative to join our team at a busy intermodal rail freight terminal in Sheffield.
The Gate Control Operative is responsible for managing the movement of vehicles, drivers and containers through the terminal gate, ensuring that all vehicles entering and leaving the site are correctly authorised, documented and processed in accordance with company procedures and terminal safety requirements.
This is a key operational role requiring excellent attention to detail, good communication skills and the ability to remain calm and professional in a busy working environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Control and monitor all vehicle movements entering and leaving the terminal.
- Check drivers, vehicles, containers and relevant documentation before permitting access.
- Process inbound and outbound container movements accurately.
- Verify container numbers, vehicle registrations, seal numbers and other relevant information.
- Operate the terminal gate management / booking system.
- Liaise with hauliers, drivers, customers, terminal operations and other relevant parties.
- Ensure drivers follow the correct site entry, exit and safety procedures.
- Identify and report damaged containers, vehicles, seals or other discrepancies.
- Deal with discrepancies or incomplete documentation and escalate where appropriate.
- Maintain accurate records and ensure all gate transactions are completed correctly.
- Communicate with the terminal team regarding container movements and operational requirements.
- Assist with managing traffic flow around the terminal gate during busy periods.
- Ensure all visitors and contractors follow the appropriate access procedures.
- Follow all company health & safety, security and environmental procedures.
- Report incidents, accidents, near misses and security concerns promptly.
- Maintain a clean, organised and professional gate-control area.
- Carry out other reasonable operational duties as required by management.
Health & Safety & Security
Safety is a fundamental part of this role. The successful candidate will be expected to:
- Follow all terminal health & safety procedures and site rules.
- Remain vigilant when vehicles and pedestrians are operating around the gate area.
- Challenge and report unsafe behaviour where appropriate.
- Follow terminal security procedures and access controls.
- Ensure unauthorised vehicles or personnel do not gain access to restricted areas.
- Participate in relevant training, briefings and safety meetings.
- Immediately report any security, safety or operational concerns.
Skills & ExperienceEssential
- Previous experience in a logistics, transport, warehouse, terminal, gatehouse or similar operational environment is preferable but not essential as training will be provided
- Good attention to detail and accuracy.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work confidently with drivers, hauliers, customers and colleagues.
- Ability to use computer-based systems and enter information accurately.
- Ability to work under pressure in a busy operational environment.
- Reliable and punctual with a strong work ethic.
- Good understanding of the importance of health & safety.
- Ability to follow procedures and instructions accurately.
Desirable
- Experience within an intermodal rail freight, container terminal or haulage environment.
- Knowledge of container movements and terminology.
- Experience using gate management, transport management or logistics systems.
- Knowledge of HGV operations and vehicle/container documentation.
- Previous experience working within a security-controlled site.
- Knowledge of rail freight or terminal operations.

Working Environment
