Based at Hemerdon Mine, ~10 miles northeast of Plymouth. No public transport to site. Own vehicle essential.

Tungsten West plc is a mining development company focussed on the restarting of the world-class Hemerdon Tungsten-Tin mine located in South Devon, UK. The Company is the 100% owner of the previously producing Hemerdon mine, which is currently the 3rd largest tungsten resource in the world. With demand for strategic metals, including tungsten and tin, increasing rapidly due to their critical use in new technology, Tungsten West is focussed on meeting this demand by restarting production at Hemerdon in the next 12 months.
Job purpose:
Tungsten West is seeking an experienced Health & Safety Advisor to join the team at a critical point in the journey of restarting production at Hemerdon. Construction is due to commence later this year and refurbishment of the Mineral Processing Facility (MPF) has recently commenced so this is a great opportunity for an experienced, confident professional to use their knowledge and influence to drive the creation of a strong safety-first culture across our mining, processing plant and offices.
You will provide expert guidance and leadership on health and safety practices, support construction, refurbishment and eventually operational teams in achieving compliance with relevant legislation and lead proactive risk management initiatives. This is a high-impact, hands-on role suited to a safety professional with strong influencing skills and a practical approach to HSE management in an industrial setting.
Responsibilities:
- Work as a professional, upholding the standards of best practice at all times.
- Provide competent health and safety advice to managers, employees, contractors and visitors across site, with a specific focus on Construction (Design & Management) Regulations 2015 (CDM) for the first 18-24 months in post.
- Act as a role model for visible safety leadership and promote a proactive safety culture at all levels of the organisation.
- Lead investigations into incidents, accidents and near misses, ensuring thorough root cause analysis and corrective actions.
- Deliver or coordinate safety training and toolbox talks to improve workforce awareness and engagement.
- Support contractor management processes, including onboarding, inductions and audits.
- Assist in the preparation and review of method statements, safe systems of work and permits.
- Support the development, implementation and continuous improvement of the Health and Safety Management System.
- Conduct regular site inspections, audits and risk assessments to ensure compliance and identify areas for improvement.
- Maintain up to date knowledge of applicable UK health and safety legislation and industry best practice.
- Monitor, review and report on key HSE performance indicators, trends and audit outcomes.
- Monitor contractor performance and ensure compliance with site rules, permits, and safe systems of work.
- Liaise with regulators (e.g. HSE) and support inspections and audits as required
Skills & Qualifications:
Essentials:
- Good working knowledge of Construction (Design & Management) Regulations 2015 (CDM).
- NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent qualification in Occupational Health and Safety.
- Proven experience in a Health & Safety role within a continuous process environment.
- Understanding of ISO 45001 and integration with ISO 14001.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to influence and lead by example.
- Experience with incident investigation methodologies e.g. ICAM or Root Cause Analysis.
- Competent IT skills, including experience using HSE software systems and Microsoft Office.
Desirable:
- Mining or quarrying safety training (e.g. MPQC / SHE Passport).
- Experience working within mining, heavy industry, processing. Mineral processing would be particularly desirable.
- First Aid, Fire Marshal or Environmental qualifications.
