The Observer, London
Immediate start for a freelancer
1 day per week, starting as soon as possible (Mon-Thurs)
Who are we?
The Observer’s promise is in the name. The Observer bears witness; the best of journalism being curious minds at work. It loves the arts and ideas, both for their own sake and because they can change lives. It’s proudly progressive but has no party allegiance. It’s open to different arguments and its editorial independence is non-negotiable. We are building a new Observer across print, audio and digital. We’re here to build journalism that lasts.
What you'll be doing
Write clear, on-brand copy across Observer channels — including digital, social, display, print, motion, and presentations.
Own the copy for our subscription acquisition and retention flows: paywall messaging, checkout, onboarding sequences, cancellation journeys, and re-engagement campaigns. Lead headline and subcopy for observer.co.uk, with a focus on conversion.
Develop and maintain brand copy guidelines and toolkits.
Collaborate with Marketing (Creative, Subscriptions, Partnerships, Corporate) and Editorial teams to ensure consistency across touchpoints.
Use performance data to test CTAs, subject lines, and key messaging.

A solid understanding of the difference between awareness, intent, and conversion copy
A deep understanding of UX Writing Principles – how copy influences user behaviour and digital navigation
You crave impact. You want to see how your words directly move the needle on conversion rates and customer retention
Exceptional written English.
