The Level 5 Childcare Practitioner is responsible for providing high-quality care and education for children in accordance with the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework and the nursery's policies and procedures. The post holder will act as a role model for colleagues, support the development of less experienced practitioners, and contribute to creating a safe, stimulating, and inclusive learning environment where every child can thrive.
Key ResponsibilitiesChildcare and Learning
- Provide a safe, caring, and nurturing environment that promotes children's wellbeing and development.
- Plan, deliver, and evaluate engaging learning experiences in line with the EYFS curriculum.
- Observe, assess, and record children's progress, identifying next steps to support their individual development.
- Act as a key person, building secure relationships with children and their families.
- Promote children's independence, confidence, and emotional wellbeing.
- Support children with additional needs and work alongside external professionals where appropriate.
- Ensure children's voices, interests, and individual learning styles are reflected in planning.
Safeguarding and Welfare
- Safeguard and promote the welfare of all children in accordance with safeguarding legislation and nursery policies.
- Recognise and report any safeguarding concerns promptly and appropriately.
- Maintain high standards of health, safety, hygiene, and infection prevention.
- Administer medication in line with nursery policies where authorised.
- Carry out risk assessments and help maintain a safe environment indoors and outdoors.
Leadership and Professional Practice
- Lead by example, demonstrating best practice in all aspects of childcare and education.
- Support, mentor, and guide junior practitioners, apprentices, and students.
- Contribute to staff meetings, training sessions, and quality improvement initiatives.
- Assist room leaders and management in maintaining high standards across the nursery.
- Promote positive teamwork and effective communication throughout the setting.
Partnership with Parents and Professionals
- Develop positive, professional relationships with parents and carers.
- Share children's progress and provide regular feedback to families.
- Work collaboratively with external agencies and professionals to support children's individual needs.
- Promote inclusion, equality, and diversity in all aspects of practice.
Administration
- Maintain accurate records, observations, accident forms, attendance records, and planning documentation.
- Ensure confidentiality and compliance with GDPR and nursery policies.
- Contribute to inspections, audits, and quality assurance processes.
Person SpecificationEssential
- Level 5 qualification in Early Learning and Childcare (or equivalent recognised qualification).
- Sound knowledge of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS).
- Excellent understanding of safeguarding and child protection procedures.
- Experience working in an early years setting.
- Strong observation, planning, and assessment skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Commitment to continuous professional development.
Desirable
- Paediatric First Aid qualification.
- Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) training or willingness to undertake it.
- Experience supporting children with additional learning needs.
- Experience mentoring or supervising staff or students.
- Knowledge of quality improvement frameworks and inspection requirements.
