M J Allen Castings & Machining are looking for a Foundry Quality Inspector Trainee. We are a Group of Engineering Companies specialising in Castings and Machining.
Job Purpose
The purpose of this role is to develop the skills and knowledge required to inspect castings and ensure they meet customer and company quality standards. The trainee will initially focus on learning and carrying out X-Ray inspection of castings, supported by training in foundry processes, inspection techniques, quality systems, and testing procedures.
The role is ideally suited to an individual with strong mathematical ability, attention to detail, and an interest in engineering and quality assurance.
Key Responsibilities
X-Ray Inspection (Primary Focus)
- Assist with and progressively undertake X-Ray inspection of castings.
- Interpret radiographic images and identify casting defects following training.
- Accurately record inspection findings and maintain inspection records.
- Learn customer acceptance standards and inspection criteria.
- Ensure X-Ray equipment is operated safely and in accordance with company procedures and relevant regulations.
Quality Inspection Activities
- Assist with first-off, in-process, and final inspections of castings.
- Learn to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and customer requirements.
- Support dimensional inspections using measuring equipment.
- Assist with dye penetrant inspection activities.
- Support chemical analysis and mechanical testing activities.
- Record inspection results accurately and maintain quality documentation.
- Assist in preparing castings for dispatch following inspection approval.
Data Recording and Analysis
- Record production and quality data accurately.
- Record casting temperatures, test bar information, and production quantities.
- Assist with stock control and inventory checks.
- Analyse inspection data to identify trends and support continuous improvement activities.
Training and Development
- Complete all required internal and external training programmes.
- Develop competence in NDT (Non-Destructive Testing) methods, including radiography.
- Gain knowledge of foundry processes, materials, and quality standards.
- Work towards relevant inspection and NDT qualifications where applicable.
Person Specification
Essential
- Strong mathematical ability and confidence working with numbers.
- GCSE Mathematics Grade 5 (or equivalent) or above.
- GCSE English Grade 4 (or equivalent) or above.
- Excellent attention to detail.
- Ability to follow written procedures and instructions.
- Good communication and teamwork skills.
- Basic IT skills and willingness to learn quality recording systems.
- Interest in engineering, manufacturing, or quality control.
Desirable
- A-Level Mathematics, Engineering, Science, or equivalent qualification.
- Previous experience in manufacturing or engineering.
- Experience interpreting technical drawings.
- Understanding of quality inspection processes.
- Awareness of non-destructive testing methods.

Working Hours
7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday
7:30 a.m. to 3:45 p.m Tuesday to Friday
Lunch: 12:30 to 1:00 p.m.
