St Helens | Full-time, Permanent | £13.00 per hour (approx. £33,000 a year)
We're a busy building merchant in St Helens looking for a Sales Assistant to join our trade counter team.
You don't need to have worked in a builders merchant before. If you're good with people, happy on your feet and willing to learn the products, we'll teach you the rest. What matters most is that you turn up, get stuck in, and look after the customers.
What you'll be doing
- Serving trade and retail customers at the counter, in person and over the phone
- Taking orders, raising quotes and processing payments on the till
- Advising customers on products, stock availability and lead times
- Picking and preparing orders for collection and delivery
- Booking in deliveries, checking stock and keeping the shop floor and yard tidy
- Helping load and unload materials (some lifting involved)
- Building relationships with our regular trade customers so they keep coming back
What we're looking for
- Good spoken English and a friendly, straightforward manner with customers
- Reliable and punctual — the counter needs covering from opening time
- Comfortable with basic computer systems and handling cash and card payments
- Able to handle building materials safely (manual handling training provided)
- Right to work in the UK
Nice to have — but genuinely not essential
- A second language. Many of our customers are Polish, Lithuanian or Latvian tradespeople, so if you speak one of those languages it's a real bonus and we'd love to hear from you. It is not a requirement — this role is open to everyone, and plenty of our customers speak English perfectly well.
- Previous experience in a builders merchant, DIY store or trade counter
- Knowledge of building or bathroom products
- Forklift licence
- Full UK driving licence

Hours
Monday to Friday, 8:00am – 5:00pm, with a paid lunch break.
Saturdays, 10:00am – 4:00pm, on a rota — you get every third Saturday off.
