Clinical Fellow Trauma and Orthopaedics
Applications are invited for a 12-month Clinical Fellow post in Trauma & Orthopaedics within NHS Lanarkshire. The post is available from 5 August 2026 and is suitable for doctors who have completed Foundation Training (or equivalent) and are seeking to increase their experience prior to entering into Core or higher surgical training.
NHS Lanarkshire provides Trauma & Orthopaedic services across three hospital sites and has a consultant body of 22 Trauma & Orthopaedic surgeons. This post offers excellent exposure to trauma orthopaedics within a busy, supportive department with a strong reputation for training and career development.
The successful applicant will join the junior resident doctor rota, participating in daytime duties, resident overnight on-call and weekend working. During on-call shifts, they will assess and manage acute trauma referrals from the three Emergency Departments across Lanarkshire, as well as urgent GP referrals, with resident middle-grade support and consultant supervision.
Alongside resident duties, there are excellent opportunities to develop operative and outpatient experience. The post includes regular attendance at trauma theatres, fracture clinics, elective orthopaedic clinics and elective operating lists under direct consultant supervision, providing valuable experience in clinical decision-making, operative skills and portfolio development.
The department places a strong emphasis on education and supports Clinical Fellows to participate in audit, quality improvement, research, undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, and leadership activities. Educational supervision, workplace-based assessments and portfolio development are encouraged, making this an excellent post for doctors intending to apply for Trauma & Orthopaedic Specialty Training (ST1) in 2027.
This post is ideally suited to motivated doctors wishing to strengthen their operative experience, develop their clinical and leadership skills, and build a competitive portfolio within a friendly and supportive department committed to high-quality training.
