Internal IT Specialist
Location: Gloucester (Waterwells Business Park, Quedgeley)
Salary: £34,000 – £36,000 per annum
Working Pattern: Full-time, office-based (5 days per week)
Please note: This is a fully office-based role located in our Gloucester office. Hybrid or remote working is not available for this position.
About the Role
Are you an IT support professional who enjoys solving technical problems, working hands-on with electronic devices and helping people get the most from their technology?
We're looking for an Internal IT Specialist to join our team at Avantis Education, supporting employees across our Microsoft 365, Azure, and on-premises network environment. You'll be the first point of contact for day-to-day IT support, ensuring colleagues have the tools, access and technical assistance they need to work effectively.
This role is ideal for someone with experience in a service desk, helpdesk or internal IT support environment who is looking to further develop their skills in Microsoft 365, networking and IT projects, taking ownership of issues from diagnosis through to resolution in a modern, cloud-first environment alongside on-site network infrastructure.
What You Will Be Doing
Provide First-Line IT Support
- Respond to support requests and troubleshoot hardware, software, and access-related issues, resolving the majority of day-to-day problems independently and escalating more complex infrastructure issues where appropriate
- Manage workload through a ticketing system, covering incident management, prioritisation and SLA adherence
- Maintain accurate documentation of incidents, requests and resolutions
Support Workplace Technology
- Configure and deploy Windows 11 Pro and macOS devices, including preparing devices for new starters and organising equipment returns
- Enrol, configure, and manage devices through Microsoft Intune and Autopilot, ensuring end-user devices remain secure, updated and operational
- Provide desktop hardware support, including computer accessories, connectivity and networked printer setup and print queue management
- Support meeting room technology and collaboration tools and assist with workspace moves and office technology setups
- Maintain accurate IT asset records and hardware inventory tracking
Support Network Infrastructure
- Manage office Wi-Fi, including controller management, mesh AP configuration, SSID creation with employee/guest network segregation and firmware updates
- Administer VLAN configuration and managed switchgear and support DHCP, DNS, and basic TCP/IP networking
Support Microsoft 365 and Azure Environments
- Assist with administration of Microsoft 365 services and support the full Microsoft 365 desktop suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.)
- Manage user accounts, licences, groups and permissions, including Azure Active Directory (Entra ID) user administration and access controls
Carry Out Hardware Repairs
- Carry out diagnostics and repairs on employee laptops and devices, including component replacement and post-repair testing
- Complete occasional repairs on VR headset products returned by UK customers — the same skills as laptop repair, applied to a different device
- Maintain accurate records of repairs completed and spare parts used
What We Are Looking For
Essential
- Some experience in a similar position providing IT support in a service desk, helpdesk, or internal IT environment
- Strong working knowledge of the full Microsoft 365 desktop suite, with familiarity in Microsoft 365 administration (user accounts, licensing) and basic Azure / Entra ID user administration
- Windows 11 Pro and macOS — deployment, configuration, troubleshooting and cross-platform compatibility support
- Networking fundamentals — Wi-Fi (controller management, mesh AP configuration, SSID creation), VLAN configuration, managed switchgear and DHCP, DNS and basic TCP/IP
- Desktop hardware expertise, including computer accessories, connectivity and networked printer setup and management
- Experience using ticketing systems (e.g. Zoho Desk, Jira Service Management, or similar) to manage incidents, prioritisation and SLA adherence
- A genuine interest in electronic devices, with the confidence and dexterity to carry out hands-on laptop and device repairs
- Experience with IT asset management, hardware inventory tracking and remote support tools (e.g. Quick Assist, TeamViewer, or similar)
- Confidence liaising with third-party support providers, raising tickets and chasing external suppliers through to resolution
- Strong problem-solving skills, excellent communication, and a customer-focused approach with ownership of issues through to resolution
Nice to Have
- Microsoft Intune and Autopilot — device enrolment, configuration profiles, compliance policies and app deployment
- Microsoft 365 collaboration administration — Teams (team/channel management, meeting policies), OneDrive for Business (storage policies, sharing controls, sync troubleshooting) and SharePoint Online (site administration, permissions, document libraries)
- Windows Server and Synology NAS administration — file shares, folder permissions, backup jobs, Active Directory integration and basic server health monitoring
- Previous experience repairing laptops, tablets, VR hardware, or similar electronic devices, whether professionally or as a personal interest
- iPhone / Android smartphone familiarity — common issues and connectivity tools, on Android devices in particular
- Experience working within a cloud-first environment
