An exciting opportunity to join a growing hospitality business in the heart of Dartmoor.
We are looking for an enthusiastic and experienced Junior Sous Chef to join the kitchen team at The Castle Inn, Lydford.
Working as part of a kitchen team of six, alongside our Head Chef and Senior Sous Chef, you’ll play an important role in delivering consistently high-quality food while continuing to develop your own skills and experience.
We’re looking for someone who is passionate about good food, enjoys working with fresh, local ingredients and wants to be part of a professional, supportive and enjoyable kitchen environment.
About The Castle Inn
The Castle Inn is a beautiful 16th-century pub with rooms, situated in the village of Lydford in the heart of Dartmoor National Park.
We are a busy destination pub with 13 bedrooms, a large restaurant, two bars, a heated and lit tent and a beautiful large beer garden.
We pride ourselves on serving fantastic food and drink, with a strong emphasis on locally sourced produce and genuine hospitality. We have built a strong reputation for our food and want to continue developing our offering by making the most of the fantastic produce available across Devon and the South West.
With hiking routes, national cycling routes, National Trust properties and World Heritage sites on our doorstep, The Castle attracts a great mix of local customers, visitors and staying guests throughout the year.

It’s an exciting time to become part of the business, with opportunities to develop and progress as we grow. We want to create great pubs that are known not only for their food and hospitality, but also for being enjoyable and rewarding places to work.
The role
As Junior Sous Chef, you’ll work closely with our Head Chef and Senior Sous Chef, supporting the day-to-day operation of the kitchen and helping us maintain high standards across every service.

- Supporting the Head Chef and Senior Sous Chef during busy services
- Helping to maintain an organised, efficient and professional kitchen
- Supporting and developing junior members of the team
- Maintaining excellent food hygiene and kitchen standards
- Contributing ideas for dishes, specials and future menus
- Taking additional responsibility within the kitchen when required
- Helping us maintain a positive, professional and enjoyable working environment
About you
We’re looking for someone with a solid foundation in a professional kitchen who is now ready to take the next step in their career.
Ideally, you will have:
- A minimum of 3 years' experience in a professional kitchen
- A genuine passion for good food and quality ingredients
- Experience working as part of a busy kitchen team
- The confidence to take responsibility during service
- A Food Hygiene Certificate
- High personal and professional standards
- A friendly and approachable manner
- A willingness to learn, develop and contribute ideas
- The ability to remain organised and calm during busy services

Working at The Castle
As with any busy hospitality business, your rota will include peak trading periods, including weekends and bank holidays.
In return, you’ll be joining an established and supportive kitchen team with experienced senior chefs around you, giving you the opportunity to develop your skills and take on more responsibility as you progress.
We are an ambitious, forward-thinking independent business with exciting plans for the future, and we want our people to have the opportunity to grow with us.
If you're an experienced chef looking for your next challenge and would like to be part of a business where quality, teamwork and genuine hospitality matter, we'd be very pleased to hear from you.
