JOB PURPOSE
Brockweir Community Shop and Café is a community-owned enterprise providing retail, café and community services for local residents and visitors.
The Shop & Café Supervisor is responsible for supporting the efficient day-to-day operation of the business, supervising volunteers and staff during their shift, maintaining high standards of customer service, and ensuring the smooth running of shop and café activities. The Supervisor will undertake opening and closing procedures, assist with stock ordering and control, and act as Duty Manager when required.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
Operational Supervision
- Act as Duty Manager during allocated shifts.
- Support the smooth day-to-day running of the shop and café.
- Ensure excellent customer service standards are maintained at all times.
- Support staff and volunteers in carrying out their duties effectively.
- Deal with routine operational issues and escalate significant concerns to the General Manager or Café Manager.
- Assist with maintaining a welcoming, inclusive and community-focused environment.
Volunteer Support
- Provide day-to-day supervision and guidance to volunteers.
- Assist with volunteer induction and on-the-job training.
- Promote good communication and teamwork between volunteers and staff.
- Support volunteers in developing confidence and competence within their roles.
- Foster a positive and supportive volunteering environment.
Stock Control and Ordering
- Assist with ordering shop stock and consumables in accordance with agreed procedures.
- Receive and check deliveries.
- Monitor stock levels and identify shortages.
- Ensure accurate pricing and product labelling.
- Rotate stock effectively and minimise waste.
- Maintain stock records using the shop's IT systems.
Cash Handling and Financial Procedures
- Follow all financial procedures and controls.
- Carry out till reconciliation and cashing-up procedures as required.
- Support volunteers and staff in following cash handling procedures correctly.
- Maintain accurate records and report discrepancies promptly.
Opening and Closing Procedures
- Open and secure the premises in accordance with established procedures.
- Undertake keyholder responsibilities when required.
- Complete all opening and closing checks.
- Ensure the security of stock, cash and premises at all times.
Health, Safety and Food Hygiene
- Comply with all health and safety, food hygiene and food handling requirements.
- Carry out routine checks and monitoring as required.
- Report maintenance, safety or compliance concerns promptly.
- Assist in maintaining a clean, safe and well-presented environment.
General Responsibilities
- Act as a positive role model for staff and volunteers.
- Communicate clearly and professionally with volunteers, colleagues, customers and committee members, both verbally and in writing.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues, volunteers and committee members.
- Promote the safeguarding and wellbeing of children, young people and adults at risk, and comply with the Society's safeguarding policies and procedures.
- Participate in training and development opportunities.
- Support the aims and values of Brockweir Community Shop and Café as a community-owned enterprise.
- Undertake other reasonable duties appropriate to the role as requested by the General Manager.
PERSON SPECIFICATION
Essential
- Experience of working in a retail, hospitality or customer service environment.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Good interpersonal skills.
- Ability to supervise and support volunteers and staff.
- Good organisational skills and attention to detail.
- Basic IT skills.
- Ability to work independently and use initiative.
- Reliable, flexible and trustworthy.
- Willingness to undertake keyholder responsibilities.
Desirable
- Experience of stock ordering and stock control.
- Previous supervisory experience.
- Experience of cash handling.
- Food hygiene qualification.
- Understanding of community-owned businesses and the role of volunteers.
PRE-EMPLOYMENT CHECKS
