Corbel Conservation is a specialist construction main contractor working on historic buildings, heritage refurbishment and conservation-led projects across the South West.
We specialise in the conservation, repair and adaptation of historic architecture, working on architecturally important buildings and technically interesting projects involving traditional buildings, conservation repairs, structural alterations, bespoke joinery, stonework, roofing, lime plaster, refurbishment and sensitive building upgrades.
Due to ongoing growth, we are looking for someone to join our commercial team and help with valuations, payment applications, variations, subcontractor accounts and some estimating and preconstruction support.
This is a varied role supporting the commercial, preconstruction and operations teams with the commercial administration and cost management of live construction projects, as well as some tender and estimating support.
This role would suit someone who already has some understanding of construction and how buildings are put together, but who may still be developing their commercial or quantity surveying experience.
Our intention is for this role to develop towards quantity surveying and commercial management over time, although there may also be opportunities to develop towards estimating and preconstruction management depending on the person’s skills, interests and the needs of the business.
Key responsibilities
Typical duties will include:
- Assisting with monthly valuations and payment applications
- Helping prepare and submit variation claims
- Reviewing drawings, specifications, schedules and subcontractor information
- Assisting with take-offs, pricing schedules and tender returns
- Preparing and issuing subcontractor and supplier enquiry packages
- Helping assess subcontractor quotations and payment applications
- Procuring materials and services for live sites where required
- Keeping variation schedules and commercial trackers up to date
- Helping maintain project cost records and supporting commercial information
- Supporting subcontractor onboarding, including health and safety questionnaires, insurances and certificates
- Supporting final account preparation
- Visiting sites to understand the works and gather information
- Liaising with site managers, contracts managers, subcontractors, suppliers and client-side quantity surveyors
- Assisting with general commercial, estimating and preconstruction administration
What we are looking for
We are open-minded about the background of the right person. Formal qualifications are helpful but not essential.
The most important thing is that you have some construction knowledge, a practical approach and an interest in developing into a commercial, quantity surveying or preconstruction role.
We are looking for someone who is organised, comfortable communicating with different people, and happy to take initiative, ask questions, solve problems and help improve existing systems and processes as the role develops.
You may already be working as one of the following:
- Trainee / Assistant Quantity Surveyor
- Trainee / Assistant Estimator
- Buyer or Procurement Assistant
- Assistant Site Manager or Site Supervisor
- Experienced tradesperson looking to move into commercial role
We would particularly welcome candidates who have spent some time on site and understand how buildings are repaired, adapted or constructed.
Skills and experience
The ideal candidate will have some or all of the following:
- Some previous experience in the construction industry
- Interest in historic buildings and the built heritage sector
- Site-based experience or a practical understanding of how construction work is planned and delivered
- A basic understanding of construction drawings, specifications, materials and terminology
- An interest in conservation and traditional construction techniques
- Experience in estimating, procurement, commercial administration, quantity surveying or project coordination
- Good numeracy, organisation and attention to detail
- Confidence using Microsoft Office and Excel
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Confidence communicating clearly and comfortably with site teams, subcontractors, suppliers, clients and other members of the project team
- Willingness to learn construction management software such as Autodesk Construction Cloud, Autodesk Build, Autodesk Forma and similar systems
- Ability to work independently, manage deadlines, use initiative and contribute to improving existing systems and processes
- Based in the South West region of the UK
- Full UK driving licence
- Comfortable visiting active construction sites, historic buildings and scaffolded areas, subject to appropriate safety procedures
Experience with valuations, payment applications, variations, estimating or subcontractor accounts would be helpful, but we are happy to provide training for the right person.
Working arrangements
This is primarily a remote working role, but the successful candidate must be based in the South West region.
Site visits will be required and may include active construction sites, historic buildings and scaffolded areas. The role will also involve attending office or team meetings when required.
Applicants must already have the right to work in the UK. Please note that the starting salary range for this role is below the current Skilled Worker visa salary threshold, so we are unlikely to be able to sponsor a Skilled Worker visa for this position.
