The Role
Due to continued growth, CDR M&E Services is looking for an experienced Commercial Gas Engineer to join our mechanical team, working across commercial sites throughout the North East. This is a varied role covering commercial gas servicing, breakdowns, fault finding, repairs, remedial works and installations.
We're looking for someone who is technically strong, reliable and comfortable working independently on commercial heating and gas systems. You'll be joining a growing mechanical division with support from our Mechanical Services Supervisor, apprentices and wider operations team.
This isn't a role where you'll simply be given a list of services every day. Our workload is varied, and you'll regularly be involved in diagnosing faults, carrying out repairs, identifying remedial works and completing small installations and upgrades.
For the right person, there will also be opportunities to develop further as the mechanical division continues to grow.
What You'll Be Doing
Your responsibilities will include:
- Servicing commercial boilers and gas appliances
- Attending commercial heating and boiler breakdowns
- Fault finding and diagnosing mechanical and gas-related issues
- Carrying out repairs and remedial works
- Commercial boiler and plant replacement works
- Working within commercial plant rooms
- Testing and purging commercial gas installations
- Gas pipework installation, alteration and repairs
- Working on pumps, valves, controls and associated heating plant
- Carrying out planned preventative maintenance
- Attending reactive maintenance call-outs
- Identifying additional defects and remedial works while on site
- Completing gas safety and compliance documentation
- Completing commissioning and service documentation
- Providing clear information for quotations where additional works are required
- Supporting and guiding apprentices where appropriate
- Liaising professionally with clients and site representatives
- Ensuring works are completed safely and to a high standard
- Completing electronic job sheets, photographs and certification accurately
- Occasionally assisting with plumbing and wider mechanical works where competent to do so.

- Leisure and hospitality premises
- Commercial estates and managed properties
Our work includes both planned maintenance contracts and reactive works, alongside installations, replacements and mechanical projects.
Qualifications & Experience
Applicants must hold current Commercial Gas qualifications and have experience working independently on commercial gas and heating systems.
Essential Commercial Gas Qualifications Applicants should hold relevant current qualifications including:
- COCN1 – Core Commercial Gas Safety
- CIGA1 – Indirect-Fired Commercial Appliances
- CDGA1 – Direct-Fired Commercial Appliances
- CORT1 – Overhead Radiant Tube & Plaque Heaters
- ICPN1 – Installation of Commercial Pipework
- TPCP1A – Testing and Purging of Commercial Gas Installations
- Domestic Gas Qualifications
You should also have:
- Strong commercial boiler and heating experience
- Good fault-finding and diagnostic ability
- Experience servicing commercial gas appliances
- Experience attending commercial boiler and heating breakdowns
- Ability to work independently and manage jobs on site
- Good understanding of commercial heating systems and plant rooms
- Ability to identify defects and required remedial works
- Good understanding of gas safety and current regulations
- Good customer communication skills
- A professional and reliable approach
- Full UK driving licence
Desirable
The following would be advantageous but are not essential:
- Unvented hot water qualification
- Commercial catering gas qualifications
- F-Gas qualification
- Ventilation experience
- Experience with BMS and heating controls
- IPAF / PASMA
