About the role
Radius Group is seeking an experienced and highly motivated Roaming Appointed Person to join our specialist lifting operations team.
Reporting directly to the Operations Management Team, this role will focus on the planning, auditing, coordination and oversight of lifting operations involving tower cranes and general lifting plant across construction projects throughout the UK.
This is a varied and client-facing position, combining both operational and technical responsibilities. The successful candidate will act as a named responsible Appointed Person on some projects whilst providing independent oversight and assurance as an overseeing Appointed Person on others.
The role requires regular travel to construction sites, where you will provide technical support, undertake lifting operation audits, mentor lifting teams and ensure projects are delivered safely, efficiently and in full compliance with current legislation and industry best practice.
An Appointed Person is more than a planner - they are a leader of lifting operations, responsible for ensuring that lifting activities are executed safely, effectively and professionally.
Key responsibilities
Planning & Technical Duties
- Produce bespoke lift plans for tower crane and lifting plant operations.
- Undertake detailed site surveys and pre-lift assessments.
- Identify site-specific hazards and operational constraints.
- Prepare Risk Assessments, Safe Systems of Work (SSOW) and Method Statements.
- Review and approve lifting documentation prepared by internal and external parties.
- Verify crane configurations, lifting accessories and lifting methodologies.
- Ensure lifting operations comply with BS 7121 and client requirements.
- Support tendering and operational teams with technical lifting advice.
- Attend client meetings, coordination meetings and project planning reviews.
- Compile detailed reports following site visits, audits and investigations.
- Provide recommendations for operational improvements and corrective actions.
Operational Responsibilities
As an experienced Appointed Person, you will:
- Plan and manage lifting operations in accordance with BS 7121.
- Act as the named Appointed Person for designated projects.
- Provide oversight and assurance for client lifting operations.
- Build positive working relationships with clients and site personnel.
- Make informed decisions under pressure.
- Resolve operational challenges in a practical and professional manner.
- Conduct formal audits of tower crane and lifting activities on construction sites.
- Brief lifting teams prior to lifting operations.
- Coordinate lifting activities with site management, principal contractors and subcontractors.
- Monitor compliance with lift plans, RA/MS and safe systems of work.
- Ensure lifting equipment and documentation remain compliant and in-date.
- Exercise the authority to stop work where unsafe conditions are identified.
- Investigate incidents, near misses and operational concerns where required.
- Create and deliver Toolbox Talks, safety briefings and lifting awareness presentations.
- Promote continuous improvement and the sharing of lessons learned.
About you
We are looking for someone who has:
- Strong leadership, organisational and communication skills.
- Excellent IT skills, including Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel.
- Excellent report-writing and organisational abilities.
- Extensive knowledge of construction lifting operations involving cranes and associated lifting plant.
- The ability to work professionally with clients and site teams.
- The confidence to challenge unsafe practices and drive compliance.
- A thorough understanding of current lifting legislation, standards and industry guidance.
- The ability to work independently whilst managing multiple projects across various locations.
Essential Qualifications
- Comprehensive knowledge of: Health & Safety at Work etc. Act 1974, LOLER 1998, PUWER 1998, CDM Regulations 2015, Relevant Approved Codes of Practice, BS 7121, CPA Best Practice Guidance
- CPCS Blue Card A61 Appointed Person Minimum 3 years' experience as an Appointed Person.
- CPCS Blue Card A62 Crane Supervisor Minimum 5 years' experience within the Tower Crane Industry.
- CPCS A40 Slinger/Signaller Minimum 5 years' experience within lifting operations.
- Full UK Driving Licence.
- Willingness to travel extensively throughout the UK.
Desirable Experience
- CPCS A04 Tower Crane Operator (A, B & C Categories).
- AutoCAD experience.
- SMSTS or SSSTS.
- Experience delivering lifting operation training or toolbox talks.
- Experience auditing lifting operations for principal contractors or major infrastructure projects.
- Familiarity with major contractor standards and lifting assurance processes.
