The nutrition support nurse plays a vital role within the multidisciplinary Nutrition Support Team, at St Mark's hospital. This post provides support to the Clinical Nurse Specialists and Nurse Consultant in providing specialist knowledge and input surrounding the safe and effective delivery of nutrition support (oral, enteral and parenteral nutrition) for inpatients, and outpatients receiving home parenteral and enteral nutrition. There is a large patient teaching component training patients to administer their home parenteral nutrition and care for their central venous catheter.
Under the guidance of the Clinical Nurse Specialists/Nurse Consultant the support nurse will;
- Facilitate nursing practice, education and advice within the speciality of nutrition support.
- Promote and monitor the implementation of clinical guidelines relating to nutrition support.
- Review inpatients receiving enteral and parenteral nutrition
- Train patients for home enteral and parenteral nutrition.
- Review home enteral and parenteral nutrition patients in the nurse led rapid access clinic
- Co-ordinate the safe discharge of patients on home enteral and parenteral nutrition.
- Ensure the safe aftercare of devices used for artificial nutrition support (enteral and parenteral nutrition).
